As the author of the piece you commented upon, i thank you. I do agree with what you say about jointness at lower echelons. I have experienced it and done my modest bid to advance it.At upto mid- levels jointness in practice makes-up for problems above but only to some extent. Yes, turf sensitivities, narrower interests often increase with rank and that is a pity. Agree with you on that as well. Although an NDA graduate, I do feel that it has not contributed towards jointness (friendships, course- cohesion etc are actually minor angles) as hoped for. Perhaps it dilutes single- service junior level professional focus that is also important.
Jointness introduced at DSSC should yield benefits. Ultimately, jointness, teamwork are attitudes more than education; walk, more than talk…I hope like you do that it will happen some day. But, why wait so patiently. Yesterday’s junior and mid- level leaders are today’s senior level leaders and some tend to develop “protectionist” attitudes that you point out when they may have thought differently yesterday. Yes, and to use your nice analogy, if anything we need to ruffle our own feathers quite a bit more!
Very nice to read & we all hope for greater jountness in times to come. I will not dwell on the existing joint organisation that have stood the test of Ops & time over the years as everyone is already aware.
With due respect Sir, jointness is a value that exists at the lower echelons of the org, but as we go higher the rigidity & lack of empathy with the other services is all pervading. Jointness is a value system that has to be drilled down right from the word go in all services. We would have truly arrived as far as jointness is concerned, only when the top brass/ wide stripes let go of their egoism & protectionist attitudes. Well Sir, it’s only a matter of time when this will happen, but for the sake of the nation it’s better it happens soon. It’s only when we shake off the identity crisis & be willing to truly see what hell the other guy is going through, that this can even begin to happen.
An interesting read Sir, thank you so much. I hope I haven’t ruffled too many feathers.
