Please raise long parts of the train line track to provide free movement underneath the train line tracks not just one tunnel’ I am concerned the lines will be fenced off creating even more problems. We know how strong and patient elephants are . They will work on something to break it down for as long as it takes. I am am concerned elephants will get inside fence lines that maybe considered to be built. Over pass bridges are expensive and tunnels are expensive and would need a lot of maintenance and checking.. These bridges and tunnels are only a small way across and can be more easily flooded in or crossing of bridges could be easily blocked of of damaged. Where raising the tracks in sections where these elephants and other animal live provides a safer way for them. Babies are less likely to be stuck or left behind like they could if they couldn’t find the single bridge or tunnel quickly. But the idea of fencing off the tracks on the ground is what worries me. Elephants will break them and get hit just as easily as they are today. Where as raising the tracks where these elephants roam will be a ‘one of’ verses fencing the track and building a tunnel or bridges will need much more maintenance because of many reasons like flooding and wind and sun damage. With fencing the train lines I think of many concerns but mostly because elephants will break them down particularly if young ones are lost stuck on the other side calling to the herd or mothers and get inside the fence line onto the tracks trying to reach separated herd family or lost babies. That scenario has played out many times in Africa however the animals have larger walk ways and keepers and officers on watch all the time and have rescued members of a herd who are confused and lost on the other side because they missed the gateway and see their herd and follow walking away from the gate way to follow them but they are stuck on the wrong side because of the fencing. My other concern is water and feed for elephant during the dry lean months. In Africa they drive trucks in to fill a water hole and they also have a unit there where they monitor the watering hole and it’s wildlife . There are many watering stations now that have been built and these they keep full via truck as well. These units also grow plants, trees, wild fruit trees, shrubs and grasses and are planted to help the elephants and other animals. I would also plant rough crops for them with things they like water melon and papayas jack fruits and other things wild style veges for the Indian elephants in patches away from humans. I like the idea of giving them their own crops to raid. My thinking may seem way out but I think if all bases are covered they are less likely to go where they are chased and attack if there are welcoming units dotted about that welcome them with water n feed. These units or a couple could evolve into re-integration units and orphanage for baby elephants to meet wild ones . This to me is the way to go and it’s all based on the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust that the late Dame Daphne Sheldrick developed or started many years ago rescuing orphaned elephant babies. It was the milk that she developed (which is like human milk and baby elephants can drink) Baby elephants can’t tolerate fats in their milk. Cows milk will kill them. Elephants are just like us they are better than us really. They like human formula milk just like us when babes. This covers only some of m thoughts on the conflict issues and some my thoughts on this train line and some of my thoughts on the difficulties the elephant are having. It’s such a shame but it looks like they (the wild elephants) have been neglected and large business projects were given the go ahead over the care needed as wild animals, the largest animal to walk this Earth. Yes they deserve this care and consideration and I’m glad there is going to be focus on this issue for them.
