I don’t believe fusion will be overcome it’s a waste waste of money and because they use electricity a vast waste of energy. They’d have to wait a very very long time til they can find out better metal from other planets or stars as it is now a vast waste of money
Fusion research is a boondoggle. Liquid fuel, molten salt fission reactors are a proven, safe, carbon free, limitless source of energy that is being essentially ignored because of all the fusion hype.
“ITER aims to produce 10 times more energy from fusion than is used to produce it”: No !! This is not exact. The experiment will produce (in 2040) 500 MW of fusion power during 400 seconds, using about 400 MW of electrical power during that short experiment. Indeed 50 MW of microwaves and particle beams are used for heating the plasma, but the global power efficiency is about 1, very far from a nuclear reactor !(commented by Th.
