A very thorough analysis on distribution of the vaccine depending on need and availability. While public health on it’s own is a major concern, it’s impact on a country’s economy is significant and must be taken into consideration while formulating healthcare policies.
Let the vaccine be made available in the market and not with Govt only. This will take burden off the Govt and Healthcare workers of all categories and people in essential services only will be Govt’s responsibility. All manufacturing units, warehousing and logistics units etc to vaccinate their workers and the expenditure allowed. Senior citizens etc, who can afford cost of vaccine to be encouraged to get vaccinated. All private hospitals, clinics, doctors etc to be encouraged to vaccinate people on payment of a reasonable fee. Hopefully, only the poor and those in remote areas will nee to be vaccinated by Govt.
Covid warriors will be first priority, whether this wise person tells or not. Next priority will be decided by politicians . Surprisingly Old is not in this wise list at all, though they are most vulnerable . Probably Good way to get rid of old !
Availability of vaccines is only the first headache to be resolved. The author may not be aware of the challenges of the health system. Do we have line lists of the various categories of personnel mentioned by her? Can we map them to service delivery units- PHCs and sub centres? Will the vaccinations be done onsite at workplaces? Do we have microplans for the same? What about cold chain logistics. Our large scale immunization program runs like a well oiled machine because of the above factors. Adapting them to new target groups will take months and years and will come at the cost of diversion of routine immunization of children under 5 years of age, putting millions of children at risk of measles, diptheria, pertusis, polio and hepatitis B. We need to think through vaccination strategies, from supply chain and service delivery perspectives and not just availability of yet unproven vaccines.
I am working from home and not in hurry to get vaccine, would prefer others to get it before me however I would like old people to get it before as well. Old people need to get out and move their bodies. Just staying at home can lead to physical issue as well as old people need social interaction, more then what most of us can understand.
