By pulling out of a one-day series against Afghanistan—citing Taliban crimes against women—Cricket Australia punishes a people for the conduct of their barbaric rulers. The reasons are right, and Afghan women are cheering, but it deprives suffering Afghans of small joys, while doing nothing to deter the Taliban.

No room for laxity in PM’s security. Hubballi breach unacceptable

Letting a over-excited child with a garland slip through the cordon protecting the PM in Hubballi was an unacceptable security lapse. Last year’s police failures in Punjab revealed gaps in the PM’s security, which clearly haven’t been plugged. The assassination of two Indian PMs shows there’s no room for laxity.

Since 1973, SC’s basic structure doctrine has formed the bedrock of Indian Constitution jurisprudence. It’s protecting unwarranted attempts by the legislature and executive to undermine judicial independence and personal liberties. Questioning it after half a century by a senior constitutional functionary is fraught with serious consequences leading to constitutional instability.
