New Delhi: A school principal in New Zealand has penned a song for children advising them to observe social distancing measures after schools reopened in the country Monday.

Shirley Serban, principal of Lake Brunner school in the South Island, wrote the song titled ‘Moist Breath Zone’ — the area within which one can feel or smell another person’s breath.

The Covid-19 virus is primarily transmitted through air droplets and contact routes. Therefore, social distancing is the most effective way to tackle it.

The three and a half minutes long music video was posted on YouTube on 9 May and has garnered over 73,000 views. It features two dogs, a coughing kitten, a yawning llama, two chimpanzees hugging and a sleepy terrier.

The song was also lauded by the Ministry of Education in New Zealand and they called the principal’s effort “fantastic”.

‘Always wash your hands’

“We’re back at school, it’s really cool, to all be here together. We made it through and I missed you, the country’s getting better,” begins the song.

It also encourages children to wash their hands and to maintain adequate distance — “I’ll share my news, but my food’s for me alone. If I smell your breath, I will go sit on my own. Always wash your hands — make them soapy, full of foam.”

Schools reopened in New Zealand Monday after most of the country-wide lockdown was lifted after seven weeks.

New Zealand has been quite successful in its battle against the coronavirus pandemic. Since Tuesday, the country has not reported any new cases of coronavirus. More than 1,400 people out of the 1,500 that contracted the virus have recovered. Over 21 people have succumbed to the virus in the country.

Malls and retail stores also opened in the country Thursday but most gatherings will be limited to 10 people and social distancing measures will also be imposed across New Zealand.
