The eruption of the Anak Krakatau volcano triggered a tsunami that caused widespread destruction in Indonesia and left over 370 people dead.
Bengaluru: The Anak Krakatau volcano in Indonesia erupted Saturday, triggering a landslide which caused a deadly tsunami. The tsunami occurred without warning, and the resulting death toll currently stands at 373, and is expected to climb.
Here are some of the deadliest videos that were posted on Twitter before, during, and after the volcanic eruption and tsunami.
Just completed a hi-speed video of yesterdays (22th December) eruptive activity at #Krakatau volcano. A new lava-flow can be seen descending to left of the island. Filmed 47km away from it, only a few hours prior to the #tsunami hitting the coast of Java. @id_magma @infoBMKG pic.twitter.com/VQaFU7pVvQ

Aerial footage shows thick plume of smoke and ash above the Anak Krakatau volcano after its eruption was believed to have triggered a tsunami that killed at least 280 people in Indonesia. https://t.co/xL8WhXiG3P pic.twitter.com/iFpYP9S7Q6

This video, taken by Captain Mykola of Susi Air, shows not just smoke, ash, and dust, but also steam. When magma comes in contact with water, it immediately vapourises the water, causing large quantities of searing steam. It can also sometimes produce explosive eruptions.

Another video of the destruction caused by the tsunami. Andersen notes that the colour of the sea is different. It seems to appear more green, which indicates that perhaps algae colonies floated up from the sea bed because of a disturbance on the ocean floor. Dust and ash also contributes to it.
