New Delhi: Indian nationals top the list of foreign nationals arrested for crimes in Nepal in the 2022-2023 fiscal, according to Nepal police data quoted by the media there.

As many as 27 Indians were among 92 foreign nationals booked for various crimes during this period. The Chinese came a close second, with 22 being booked in this fiscal, a report published in Kathmandu Post has said.

Half of the arrested Indians have been charged with customs evasion, followed by dealings in counterfeit currency. Other charges against Indians pertain to extortion, kidnapping and forgery, the report added

The report also cited police records to state that the Chinese accused were involved in more serious crimes, including murder. While two Chinese national were the only foreigners to to be charged with murder in Nepal in this fiscal, other crimes in which Chinese nationals have been accused include rape and hostage-taking.

Porous border doesn’t help

The article also quoted Nepal police as saying that the number of Indians involved in crimes in Nepal could be because of the 1750-km open border between the two countries.

It is easy for citizens of either country to cross the border without being questioned. Last month, an Indian was arrested in Kathmandu for alleged involvement in an illegal money exchange business. The accused, Vijay Kumar, from Himachal Pradesh, was allegedly carrying on the illegal business “under the cover of fruit-trading”.

Indians also make up a good number of tourist arrivals in Nepal. In February, more than 73,000 foreigners visited the country, with Indians accounting for a quarter.

After India and China, Thai nationals top the list of foreigners accused of committing crimes in Nepal, according to the Kathmandu Post report. Five Thai nationals were arrested for drug smuggling and one for dealing in counterfeit currency in Nepal this fiscal.

In the 2021-22 fiscal, the police had arrested 108 foreign nationals from 41 countries, including 31 Indians, the article added.
