New Delhi: An Indian student studying in China was the subject of intense online criticism last week, for allegedly using “offensive slurs” against the Chinese, according to a report in Global Times.

The student, identified as Kadukkasseri in the report, had reportedly used slurs like ‘Chinese pigs’ and ‘chinks’ in the comments section of Douyin, an app similar to TikTok in China, on 16 June.

Screenshots of his comments have since gone viral on the Chinese microblogging platform Sina Weibo. The report said the student’s remarks “insulted” China and its people.

Weibo users in China called Kadukkasseri “despicable” and even asked him to “immediately leave the country”, Global Times reported.

Student apologises for comments

After the online backlash against him, Kadukkasseri apologised for his comments Friday. In a statement on Weibo, he said he was sorry for “hurting the feelings of many Chinese citizens”, and acknowledged that his actions had a negative impact on his university and on foreign students.

He also said he had deleted his offensive comments and blocked his account on Douyin.

“I promise things like this won’t happen again,” Kadukkasseri added in his statement.

According to Global Times, Kadukkasseri is a student at the Jiangsu University (JSU) in eastern China, and that the university has taken cognisance of his actions.

“The university will punish Kadukkasseri for his wrongdoings according to its regulations on overseas students after a further investigation,” a university employee identified as Wu told the Chinese publication.
