Seattle, Albany, St. Paul, Hamtramck and Cambridge have also denounced the laws, more than seven months after they were passed in the Lok Sabha.

New Delhi: San Francisco has become the sixth US city to pass a resolution denouncing India’s contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019 and the National Register of Citizens (NRC). Similar resolutions have already being passed earlier by Seattle, Albany, St Paul, Hamtramck and Cambridge.

In a city council meeting held Tuesday, local San Francisco organisations, such as the American Institute of Islamic History and Culture, San Francisco Interfaith Council, the San Francisco Human Rights Commission and the San Francisco Muslim Community Center, had come together with the Alliance for Justice and Accountability (AJA), an umbrella coalition of progressive organisations across the US, to censure the CAA-NRC laws.

They have termed the laws an act that renders “millions of people, among minorities and caste oppressed, stateless”.

Hala Hijazi, who is the commissioner of San Francisco Human Rights Commission, and also a board member of the San Francisco Muslim Community Center as well as the San Francisco Interfaith Council, said, “We are proud of the city and county of San Francisco for standing on the right side of history…San Francisco is leading the moral consensus in the global outcry against the CAA.”

Asserting how international condemnation of “genocidal campaigns” was important, she added, “The Bay Area community feels a deep sense of solidarity with their electeds, as the time to stand against the Indian government’s Islamophobic policies is now.”

During the meeting, the AJA also said that using religion to grant citizenship was a “flagrant violation of all norms of secular democracies besides being inconsistent with India’s Constitution that guarantees equality before the law for people of all faiths”.

Terming the Indian government as “Hindu nationalist”, the council meeting also noted that the laws were “discriminatory to Muslims, caste oppressed, women, indigenous peoples and the LGBTQ community”.

The other five cities that have passed resolutions against the CAA-NRC have similarly called the laws “exclusionary and bigoted”.

Indian twitterati’s response

While the move was appreciated by South Asians residing in San Francisco, social media users in India had a different response.

“I denounced US citizenship just now. Wait! how can I denounce something that I don’t possess?” tweeted one user.

Another commented saying, “UP has also passed a resolution against US’ gun culture.”

Arjun Sethi, a human rights lawyer and activist, noted, “San Francisco just passed a resolution denouncing the CAA & NRC. Six US cities have now condemned Modi, Amit Shah & fascism in India. Organised Hindutva elements tried to stop the measure, but they failed. More resolutions are coming. You can’t stop the forces of history.”

Yet another user raised questions about the relevance of this move: “What happens once resolution is adopted by the cities? Do they declare war? Do they stop doing business? Do they prohibit Indian passport holders from their cities? Do they stop any Indian business from investing in those cities? What actually happens once resolution is adopted.”

  1. Why India have to allow peoples from others country whereas it’s already full with peoples. In regarding San Francisco city council denounced against CAA and NRC : US also not allowing people from others countries and for that reason they build a wall in Mexican border and of course all countries has right to stop people from others country to protect their citizens to provide safety and better facilities…I oppose
San Francisco city council for voting against India’s CAA-NRC.

  2. In a race to the bottom, these virtue signalling leftists are pursuing a policy of maximum idiocy. These leftists have done nothing as Hindus were exterminated from Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Pakistan for decades – today they stand in the way as the Govt of India seeks to protect them and offer them a place of sanctuary from islamist depradations.

These cities have exposed themselves – and the leftists in America who remained silent as lakhs of Hindus have been massacred in Islamic majority countries of South Asia. They are not just Hindu-phobic they are pro-Islamist and pro-Genocide. They need to be called out for that as they were silent to the ongoing and continued persecution of religious minorities in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and even China.

  3. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA………It’s like those communists, who held an umbrella in India when it rained in Moscow back in the 1970s. These silly protestors do not matter, just like the Print’s journalism. I was just here searching for Himanta Biswa Sarma and Sekhar Gupta’s interview when I stumbled here. But keep trying, maybe you can get some Pakistani viewers here.

  4. These are machinations by Islamists generally found embedded into civil life with covert support from The terrorist state of Pakistan. It means zilch, zero, nada. No one gives a flying eff to the city council resolution passed by ISI sleeper agents embedded in the US. Majority of US Citizens love India specially when compared with the Islamist states next door. The proof of their secularism is in complete silence regarding state sponsored terrorism on Hindus and minorities of other hues in Pakistan and continued forced conversation by jihadi Islamists.

  5. This is lubricous … some islamic organizes a pointless meeting and are posing as a resolution against India…
Imbeciles have not even read the constitution and dont even understand what the NRC or CAA stand for

Also why on earth some body form US is bothered about India.. when they dont even understand it

  6. biased and uneducated. this is mischievous by some Pakistani groups. CAA is for pakistani and not for Indian citizens, they do not want Pakistani trying for indian citizenship

  7. A group of people that are the most Racist in the world as shown by Floyd murder. The killing of native Americans. Continued interference everywhere in the world. They can adopt whatever they want. I am not sure why it is a big deal for the BROWN MAN….???????? Whats the big deal? We should embrace tit for tat resolutions in our states as well.

  8. Seriously !!!??? Shri Deol, haven’t you got anything better to do than covering what local councils are doing in the US. Go get a life

And Dear Print , if you want to be a serious paper then act like one!!! Young seem to be going the NDTV way which covers who is saying what on Twitter or which videos of cows singing are going viral and then calling themselves a “ serious channel”

  9. Now, some bigoted idiots in San Francisco knows more about Indian constitution than rightfully elected Indian legislatures. There seem to be no end to these jokers

  10. AJA is a coalition of varied groups – most of them Islamic and involved in peddling soft Islamism. The irony is that though these organizations are primarily Islamic and their members usually hail from Islamic majority nations, yet they show absolutely no concern for the plight and misery on non-Muslim minorities in their own respective nations. Through their silence they condone all acts of state sponsored oppression and brutalization of non-Islamic minorities in these nations. Not even once did they denounce and decry the evil deeds of nations like Saudi Arabia, Iran or Pakistan.
However, they are very concerned about secularism in India and the Indian Constitution.
