3 Pakistani militants killed in Baramulla encounter, 1 policeman dead too

Valley has seen increasing violence since last October with targeted killings of administrative officials and Kashmiri Pandits.

New Delhi: Three Pakistani militants were killed Wednesday in an encounter in Baramulla, the Jammu and Kashmir Police said.

Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, Vijay Kumar said a police personnel had also been killed in the operation.

The encounter took place at the Najibhat crossing in Baramulla’s Kreeri area. The Army assisted the police in the operation, officials said.

Militant activity has been on the rise in the Valley since last October with targeted killings of police and government officials, as well as Kashmiri Pandits.

Just 24 hours ago, a police constable was shot dead outside his home in Srinagar. Militants also injured his seven-year-old daughter in the indiscriminate firing, the police said.

The incident took place in Srinagar’s Soura area. The policeman was identified as Saifullah Qadri.

On 12 May, a Kashmiri Pandit government employee, Rahul Bhat, was shot dead in his office in Chadoora, Budgam.

Protests against the killing continue till today, with marches and sit-ins against the administration.

Protesters want his killers brought to book, as well as relocation for Kashmiri Pandit employees who got jobs under the Prime Minister’s package.
