Top 5 most known movie directors of all time

There are thousands of film directors in India from the Golden Era to the present modern cinema days. Thousands of films are released in hundreds of vernacular languages in India. I have listed the top five movie directors of all time based on directing the best movies and receiving national and international awards. The Government of India honored their film career and was given many awards. 

  1. Satyajit Ray

According to Biographywikipedia, He was the first Indian to take indie moves in Bengali and later became the pride of India in out-of-studio filmmaking. He is no longer living his 36 films that are worth watching again and again. Satyajit Ray was active in the film industry from the 1950s to 1992. His debut film was Pather Panchali in 1955. Other hit movies are Devi, Kanchenjungha, Hirak Rajar Deshe and Agantuk. Satyajit Ray is the recipient of many national awards and international awards. Finally, the Government of India awarded the Bharat Ratna, which is the highest civilian award given to his outstanding works in the Indian and global film industry. A few of his film stories were stolen and made in foreign films. 

2.  Guru Dutt

Guru Dutt is a renowned actor, director, producer, and choreographer in the Indian film industry. He was active from 1946 to 1964. His real name is Vasanth Kumar Shivashankar Padukone, a native of Padukone village, Karnataka. His hit films as an actor and director are Baazi, Mr. & Mrs. ’55, Pyaasa, and Kaagaz Ke Phool. His all-time hit was Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, in which he produced a film. He is the winner of BFJA, film fare, and National film fair award for Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam as the best actor and the best Hindi movie. His collaboration with Dev Anand established him as a famous Bollywood director. They both gave hit films of those days as an actor and directors.

3. Adoor Gopalakrishnan

According to adetruna, He is a living legend from Kerala and noted for taking real-life happening native movies. He has been active in Mollywood since 1965. His debut film was Swayamvaram. His notable films as director and screenplays are Kodiyettam, Elippathayam, Nizhalkuthu, Naalu Pennungal, and Pinneyum. All his films were screened in international film festivals. The Government of India gave Padma Vibhushan in 2006, Padma Shri in 1984, and Dadasaheb Phalke Award was given in 2004 for his outstanding contribution to Indian Cinemas. Apart from this, he is also next to Satyajit Ray to be named in the list of state and national awards given for films. Today, he takes many documentaries and short films and goes a judge in selecting films for awards in various categories.

4. K. Balachander

Balachander is a famous actor, playwriter, producer, screenwriter, and film director in Tollywood. His Hindi feature film Ek Duuje Ke Liye in 1981 was much acclaimed all over India. He was active from 1964 to 2014. He has directed many Tamil, Telegu, and Kannada movies. His debut movie was Neerkumizhi in 1946. He is famous for making films with family values, woman appraisals, sadist stories, love stories, and comedies. There is no flop history with this director in Tamil films. Uthama Villain is the last film in which he acted before his death. He is the recipient of many film fare awards, including Kalaimamani, Padma Shri, Dadasaheb Phalke Award, and ANR National Award.

5. Mira Nair

Mira Nair is a renowned woman film director in India. Her films are of international acclaim and did receive many international awards. Salaam Bombay was her first film in 1988. According to gojina, Her controversial film was Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love in 1996. Her hit films are Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love, Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love, Vanity Fair, The Namesake, and A Suitable Boy. Her national and international awards are Golden Osella, Golden Camera, Golden Lion, National Film Award, Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards, and Faith Hubley Memorial Award is given for the best film and director. In 2012, the Government of India gave her Padma Bhushan for her contribution to the film industry. In 2013, she boycotted the guest of honor at Haifa International Film Festival.
