Gadisar Lake

Built in 1400 AD by the then Maharaja of Jaisalmer, Maharwal Gadsi Singh, the Gadisar lake was originally meant to be used as a reservoir for rainwater harvesting. It was one of the primary water sources for the entire city. Today, it has gained a reputation as one of the best Jaisalmer tourist places as people come here to seek peace and tranquillity and escape the city’s chaos.

Surrounded by many temples and shrines, the lake is also an excellent spot for birdwatching and attracts many avifauna lovers. During the winters, many migratory birds from faraway places like Serbia and Africa flock here, adding to the charm of this place.

Bada Bagh

Bada Bagh literally translates to ‘big garden’ in Hindi. Although Jaisalmer is a desert city, the past rulers of the city made many attempts to add greenery to the desert oasis, and the Bada Bagh is one such successful endeavour that has stood the test of time. It is one of the most sprawling gardens in the state and houses many royal tombs, which are as old as Jaisalmer city itself.

Salim Singh ki Haveli

One of the most popular places to visit in Jaisalmer, Salim Singh Ki Haveli is a grand structure that was built during the early part of the 18th Centre, and it was once the official residence of the Mehta family, one of the most influential families in the city during that era. Salim Sing, the then Prime Minister of Jaisalmer, commissioned this building, and it instantly gained immense popularity in the region because of its unique architecture.

Tanot Mata Temple

The highly revered Tanot Mata Temple is an important place of worship for the locals. The temple’s main deity, Tanot Mata, is believed to be the incarnation of Goddess Hinglaj Mata. Established in 847 AD, this temple miraculously was left unscathed even though it is close to Longewala, which was the site of the India-Pakistan war in 1965 and 1971.

Many soldiers who were posted near the temple share many magical stories associated with the temple. For instance, some soldiers have said they were untainted even though Pakistan dropped over 3000 bombs near the temple site.

Tazia Tower

When you talk of Jaisalmer sightseeing, you cannot possibly leave out mentioning Tazia Tower. One of the major tourist attractions in the city, this stunning tower is a testimony to the brilliance of Rajputana architecture. Located in the Badal Palace complex, near Amar Sagar Gate, the tower is a 5-storied structure, and each floor has its significance.

Jaisalmer Fort

One of the largest forts in the world, the Jaisalmer fort is a must-visit when you are in the city. Located on Tirukuta Hill, it was built by Rao Jaisal, who is considered one of the mightiest rulers of Jaisalmer.

Due to its location on the golden stretches of the Thar Desert, the locals refer to the fort as ‘Sonar Quila’ or the Golden Fort. Over the past few centuries, the fort has seen many battles and has stood tall, basking in all the glory and pride as one of the most magnificent forts in India.

Apart from its stunning beauty, the fort is also known for housing many iconic monuments, including Laxminath Shrine, Raj Mahala, and many Jain temples.

Sam Sand Dunes

One of the most authentic desert dunes sites in India, Sam Sand Dunes is a popular tourist spot. The dunes here are about 30-60 metres, and if you are looking for some adventurous things to do in Jaisalmer, you can go on a camel or jeep safari in the dunes.

Located about 45 km west of Jaisalmer city, you can find many desert camps in and around the dunes. The best time to visit the dunes is in the evening between four to seven. In the evening, you may even enjoy seeing musical programs as the local artists folk dance and sing folk songs, displaying the rich culture and tradition of Jaisalmer.
