No unity on theatre commands, and a 100-year plan to save the Taj Mahal

Days after defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the government wanted the military to move towards creating theatre commands, Sujan Dutta of ThePrint reports about an IAF position paper arguing that integrated theatre commands will strain its resources.

Panama Papers: First case sent to court. Just over two years after the Panama Papers revelation, the finance ministry has announced that Rs 1,140 crore in undetected income and assets was traced to Indians who incorporated offshore companies, reports The Indian Express. Farooq Abdullah accused in Rs 43 crore J&K cricket association ‘scam’, chargesheet filed. The CBI has charged former Jammu & Kashmir chief minister and National Conference patron Farooq Abdullah and three others with “embezzlement” and “misappropriation” of BCCI funds to the tune of over 43 crore between 2002 and 2011. The funds were meant for the J&K Cricket Association (JKCA), reports The Tribune.

MHA urges quicker issue of long-term visas: With the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, hanging fire, the union home ministry has stepped up efforts to expedite the grant of long-term visas (LTVs) to “persecuted minorities” from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, reports The Hindu. As per new guidelines, the state government will have to issue security clearance for LTVs to minorities from the nations within 21 days, failing which their approval will deem to have been taken.

Pass women’s reservation bill, says Rahul Gandhi. Congress president Rahul Gandhi Monday pledged unconditional support to the bill seeking reservation for women in Parliament, and wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking him to ensure the passage of the legislation in the monsoon session of Parliament, reports PTI.

As Congress president Rahul Gandhi came under attack for reportedly saying the party was a “Muslim party” at a recent meeting with intellectuals and activists of the community, Navika Kumar of Times Now asked,”Can Rahul deny #CongForMuslimsCharge?”

Blaming the BJP for fanning a controversy over the statement, Samajwadi Party spokesperson Juhie Singh said, “Why is the BJP going so ballistic  about it?”

Countering Juhie’s comment, BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia added, “We are ballistic because the secular fabric of the country is being destroyed by the Congress.”

Meanwhile, political analyst Tehseen Poonawalla said, “Congress is a party for everyone which includes Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs.”

The BSP has pitched Mayawati as a contender for the PM’s chair in 2019. Will she be able to challenge Narendra Modi, anchor Bhupendra Chaubey asked on CNN-News 18.

“I do not think they can send Mayawati to jail. She will stand resurrected among the people” said journalist Saba Naqvi, referring to the corruption charges against the former CM.

“The people have seen the quality of governance that the BJP can provide. They have also seen that a Karnataka CM is crying because he is in an alliance,” pointed out the BJP spokesperson.

“Mayawati is working with a great strategy towards 2019 and the results are there to be seen in the bypolls. She is the biggest Dalit politician in the country,” said BSP leader Anubhav Chak.

“This alliance between Akhilesh and Mayawati is an alliance for the people. The nation wants a new PM,” commented SP spokesperson Ghanshyam Tiwari.
