Kerala minister Kadakampally Surendran's statement comes amid Congress and BJP raking up the 2018 Sabarimala temple incidents in a bid to target Kerala's CPI(M) government.
The state government said the authority had constituted a high-level committee which had set the number of pilgrims per day to 2,000 on weekdays and 3,000 on weekends.
Among the 39 positive cases, 27 are temple employees, while rest are police personnel and pilgrims. The pilgrimage season will continue till 20 January 2021.
Although Kerala initially managed its coronavirus outbreak effectively, since July, its administration has been struggling to contain the spike in cases.
Only a limited number of pilgrims who register through the virtual queue system will be permitted entry into the temple, and those below 10 and above 60 won't be allowed.
