Strong governments with forbidding mandates have lost their way in the past. Fawning courtiers, including those in the media, should be the first to get their metaphorical pink slips.
Big mandates are required to do big things, lift the country to a higher orbit. Normal functioning toh sarkar ki hoti rehti hai. Thirty years after India chose – virtually at gun point- a brave new path, we are back to protectionism. Not part of global value chains. Exports have stayed put at $ 300 billion for five years. Authentic data is hard to come by, but we may be the only important economy to be actually losing millions of jobs. This will inevitably lead to a rerating of India as a regional power. What some have called the curse of a second term is upon us.
