Others who criticised it didn’t realise that this was the only way out of the mess created by A.K.Antony and company. Now we shall have very soon 36 world class fighter planes and in addition indigenously developed Tejas aircrafts.
As long as GOI continues to prop up it’s failing PSUs, such issues will continue to plague defence procurement. The simplest way to sort out this would have been to tell Dassault to set up a unit in India to manufacture the entire order. This would have built up an ecosystem of trained Indian manpower and suppliers and created jobs and wealth. But for the GOI this is secondary to propping up PSUs that survive on tax payers money.
Parrikar took a sensible approach and PM Modi acted decisively to address the dire situation faced by the IAF by taking a pragmatic decision to scrap the process and buy whatever number of aircraft we could afford off the shelf. Do not, however, be so quick to condemn PSUs and uphold foreign arms makers as knights in shining armor. Their devious approach is one of the reasons the tender failed. We have to pay through our nose to buy such equipment. In the end we can only do well by designing and building our own aircraft.
