Mamata Banerjee is the eighth Chief Minister of the eastern Indian state of West Bengal and the first woman to hold this office. She founded the Trinamool Congress in 1998 after splitting from the Indian National Congress and has represented the Bhabanipur constituency in the state assembly since 2011.
When Mamata Banerjee first joined the Congress (I) in the 1970s, she rose to be the General Secretary of the State Mahila Congress (I) from 1976 to 1980. She has previously served as an MP for Kolkata South in the Lok Sabha and was the Union Minister of State for Human Resources Development, Youth Affairs and Sports, and Women and Child Development under the P.V. Narasimha Rao government.
One of the defining moments in Mamata Banerjee’s political career was her involvement in the Singur and Nandigram movements. These movements — centered around land acquisition issues, particularly the acquisition of agricultural land for industrial projects — saw her rise as a leader and advocate for the rights of farmers and local communities in Bengal’s Singur and Nandigram districts. She received widespread support, eventually leading to the downfall of the 34-year-old Left Front government in West Bengal and her ascent to power.
I don’t think India grooms either male or female politicians. Indian Politics offers adequate opportunities for man and woman equally. In fact in some situations woman as a politician has advantage over man. If a woman as politician is willing to do all that a male politician would do, woman won’t lag behind man. Juhi Tiwari is a frustrated journalist and she views most political matters with jaundiced vision.
Aap hamesha Juhi Chawla aur Ruhi Tewari ko mix up kar dete hain …
Maharashtra seems especially averse to women in power. Shalinitai Patil is the last tough lady one can recall. Supriya Sule and Pankaja Munde are essentially their fathers’ daughters. One recalls with affection and respect EAM Sushma Swarajji. There must be misogyny, not selection, at work, to keep women from rising in politics.
… not natural selection …
Three leaders named by you Sonia Gandhi, Mamta Banarjee and Mayawathi represent the corrupt brigate of women politicians. Let them perish. Allow some time for the new leaders like Smriti Irani and Priyank Gandhi to evolve. Rome wasn’t built in a single day.
All three of them have a reputation for being control freaks and corrupt. Not the best role models for women.
In the present political scenario the younger women political leaders are playing a second fiddle to their men relatives. The BJP-RSS culture does not want women to be top leaders. It would like them to be helpers or stop gap in their political scheme.
Lol out of the three writer quoted two are from BJP. Still blame them. You xian stooges are the worst of all. Why not tell your Italian to come out of her son loving , support priyanka.
