After Nehru’s death in 1964, Lal Bahadur Shastri’s instincts that neither Indira Gandhi nor JP would put a claim to prime ministership turned out to be accurate.
The legitimacy RSS and Jana Sangh achieved after Jayaprakash Narayan included them in his movement against Indira Gandhi’s rule is being milked even today.
In his memoirs, J.P. Goyal, a key lawyer for Raj Narain in his case against Indira Gandhi, wrote about meeting detained opposition leaders during the 1975 Emergency.
Coomi Kapoor's book The Emergency explores the complicated relationship between Jayaprakash Narayan and Indira Gandhi who widely differed in their opinions.
Over 50 years ago, Jayaprakash Narayan had advocated more autonomy for Jammu and Kashmir on many occasions, but ruled out de-accession or independence.
On JP’s birth anniversary, reposting my trip down memory lane to 1977-78, and conspiracy theories about why his health deteriorated during the Emergency.

While releasing 'India Employment Report 2024', V Anantha Nageswaran said govt can't solve 'all social, economic challenges'. Congress leader Kharge says CEA protecting 'dear leader'.
In an interview with Gulistan News this week, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the government would leave law and order to J&K Police and slowly withdraw troops.
The ‘idea’ Kejriwal's politics grew around was a no-holds-barred fight against corruption. That is the reason Modi govt has now tarred him and his entire party with the same paint.
He does not imply he has clearly stated that Nehru was younger by 14 years. Even after reading what is said above you still talk about succession when Nehru was not even present!!!!!
It is not written by Shekhar Gupta for your information but son of H Y Sharda Prasad who was Secretay to Indira and probably Nehru and possibly Shekhar was in his Childhood at that time. You Northerners have an aversion for Nehru and you wear it on
your sleeve!!! You could not have seen a Pm better than Nehru who cherished his democractic ideals and really functioned as a true democrat.
Interesting article. Read it in one go. It kept me hooked till the end. Many kudos, “The Print”.
Good attempt to whitewash dynastic tendencies of Nehru. To be fare it did not start from Jawaharlal, it started still earlier, from Motilal when he got his son nominations for Congress precidency.
Congratulations on your loyalty to the family and expecting the world to forget whatever they have read.
The Print should analyse recent history and future courses for India. It could begin by unravelling how Shekhar Gupta the owner of The Print came to acquire Rs 100 Crores of wealth merely by being a journalist. The country and common Indians could get clues on how national and personal wealth can be enhanced.
This is all ancient legends. The country has to move forward. The main thrust of study of events in the past decades ought to be why India which got independence in 1947 vis-a-vis China in 1949 and started with a far better economic infrastructure cannot match even a fraction of China’s achievements.
This has much to do with the British transferring power to mainly the lawyer class which was in the British mould and which had made money by using the British Indian legal system which money in turn fuelled their political ambitions. Mist were England educated lawyers. They had little understanding of administration, military or even diplomatic nuances.
I am at a loss to know the purpose and need of writing this report by a journalist now in May 2020. The timing selected is
appearing to be inappropriate.
It is after all history and if we do not know the past we have no future that is why.
According to Sunil Khilnani, Indira Gandhi accepted a position in Shastri’s cabinet due to her “desire for financial security” as her husband left her no property and Pt. Nehru too left her with no inheritance other than royalty on his books as the primary source of income (Khilnani, S., 2016: 538; Incarnations: India in 50 Lives; Allen Lane.)
Why to distort known history of the current period ? In End of forties of last century two dynasties were established in Asia. first one in India and another in North korea. In North Korea, Kim II Sung captured power and made his party, country s constitution to perpetuate his dynasty. After his death his worthy Kim Jong -IL was place on vacant throne. When he died his son, and Kim II sung s , grandson- Kim Jong -Un was natural and only choice and still adorns the premiership of North Korea, notwithstanding rumours about his health some times back. In India , being a successor state of British imperial Government , where government model was copied with some amendments here and there from western models instituted a form of democracy , which was/is a democracy in name only , but in actual practice a Constitutional monarchy , as its basic component a multi-party based election mechanism. to keep power in a Family , congress party was made a family orgnisation by ensuring and nominating every person born in the Royal Nehru family in successive generations as legitimate candidate to head congress party as the President. It started in 1957 when Indira, daughter of Nehru ji was made party president and tradition is kept on going till date. so installation of Indira gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi , Sonia Gandhi ,Rahul Gandhi as congress president and PM ran unabated. congress party put up a good number of journalists, leftist historians to project them as a practitioner of democratic norms and respectful of democratic institutions. All this is current history , Do not try to white wash it. Black spots will always remain visible. , Be impartial. Report and write what actually happened. Story telling is no history. A meets B. The present dispensation does not distort facts according to you. Keep it up.!!!!! Whereas the Author is saying something before 1966 you are talking about things happened later .Yes the same type of fooling is going on now if you like.
Yet another lie. Trying to get Nehru and Indira in good books, as expected.
Indra Gandhi came by a forenoon train to Patna to attend 1961 62 Congress session.Only two persons were there to receive her myself in offlcial capacity as DCS Eastern Rly. and Sitaram Kesri a young congress worker of Danapur. I asked him why he came he told me four persons decide tickets for.MP and she is one of them.I thought of Stalin Trotsky affair given in Will Durant book..Nehru must have known
It is insulting to call our most revered leader Mr. K. Kamaraj by clubbing his caste name to him as Kamaraj Nadar. In my past thirty five years of public readings this is the first time I came across such nonsense. Nobody in Tamilnadu State mentioned his caste name. I condemn the author and The Print for not having respect to Indian constitution and lack of basic underlying progressive thinking.
The author implies Nehru was chosen prime minister over Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. By whom? Congress voted to make Nehru PM? India’s fate was sealed and Indira’s ‘succession’ was assured once democratic process was suppressed to elevate Nehru.
He does not imply he has clearly stated that Nehru was younger by 14 years. Even after reading what is said above you still talk about succession when Nehru was not even present!!!!!
Lies,Lies,Lies because Shekar Gupta who is a Congress Paid is trying to distance from the obvious.

He is from North India and you Northerners have no respect for anyone. Who is telling you to believe it.
You people are fed on wrong propaganda since the last few years so your vision is blurred. Just do not reject anything outright.
The Print is advised to investigate the Army Coup story that was narrated to the country by Shekhar Coupta.

I was a college student in that period and was avid reader of newspapers. The contents of this article match to what I read in newspapers.

Excellent article about a great man. There is absolutely no reason to contradict any of the information give out by the author. That was and is Nehru

You are writing this story after more then 50+ years ahve passed away and Indira and her kids have hi-jacked the Congress party and there is Dynasty.
So what better late than never when Nehru’s legacy is belittled today.
Even Soniaji wants the nest candidate to head the congress party.
