Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s visit allowed us to reiterate the durable positives in our ties and address issues on which our views do not converge.
The Ministry of External Affairs said both sides held bilateral consultations in Moscow Tuesday on issues which are on the agenda of the UN Security Council.

As long as we get what we want from Russia (S400 and other equipment), rest of the issues are manageable. Ideally, Russia and India should form a Duo (like Quad) to protect their core interest and manage USA and China together. But Russia is deeply involved with China and hence, more likely to oblige! We have another 10 years or so to become AtmaNirbhar in defense production and will have to do tight rope walking with Russia and USA. Alternatively, India should mediate between USA and Russia and cool down the temperature but this is easier said than done.
Indo Russian differences are overdone. Irrespective of Russia China bonhomie, Russia would never like to put all it’s eggs in the Chinese basket. India must not make the mistake of pushing Russia totally into Chinese as the West (US & UK) has done. The West has its own philosophies and seeks enemies where there are none. There is no reason for India which has always had excellent relations with the Soviet Union to follow the same path. Let’s not forget China and Russia have had relationship troubles in the past unlike India and Russia. Some of the largest Russian military deployments are on it’s borders with China. For all of Russian Chinese bonhomie India and Russia enjoy far greater trust between themselves. Not worth losing this because the West sees hidden demons everywhere.
