Nayar, also known for advocating better India-Pakistan ties, died 23 August, five days after he was admitted to a hospital with pneumonia.
New Delhi: Friends and...
Agnihotri has lately gained attention for his ‘anti-Maoist’ ideology, and for propagating an idea that there is ‘institutionalised terrorism’ in Indian society.
Peter Manuel's ‘Cassette Culture’ showed the booming Bhakti music during the '80s and '90s when Anoop Jalota, Gulshan Kumar achieved success by singing the sanitised Bhajans.
Economists say there are weaknesses in India’s GDP data. But statisticians claim the accusations are based on flawed understanding, saying while GDP has problems, the economists are looking in the wrong places.
Sandip, it is not about execution. BJP leadership is at best self-serving, though pretending to be working for others. DeMon was at best a stupid policy choice. In my assessment and what one hears from people in the know, it was to take away someone’s else black and convert into your own money. Black marketing started with the announcement itself. I don’t believe that people in the government or PMO or PM himself did not know this. If they did not, we know what kind of capability they have. If that is the case, they are characterised by cunningness without adequate intelligence. They have no business to defend this choice, even when we all know that it has hurt more people that it has benefited. Election machinery is not of much use, if people choose to teach these unthinking, uncaring leaders and their cronies. They, of course, have enough money to buy votes (assuming all of us are willing to sell ourselves – I don’t believe that) and enough friends in the media who will lie on their behalf or will spread BJP/RSS lies. WhatsApp has been found to be a great medium – no cost but wide impact. At the same time, if BJP can spread lies so can others. Governance is not about power – Modi seems to believe that. That is why he and his cronies keep threatening everyone. Governance at the level of country (or at any other level for that matter) is about humility (not fake one that Modi demonstrates more often than not). We, the ordinary people, have fight the monsters (policies and mobs) let loose by the politicians. These fellows promised that they are different from Congress and now the only justification they have is that Congress allowed people to be killed, we will do in larger numbers. Congress stole, we will steal more. Congress did nothing, we will do nothing. Mr Modi dresses up for the video and a public funded house and gets a video shot about how he does exercises. Hundreds of millions of people don’t even have a place to live and he shows up in fancy dresses doing exercises. What does it tell us about his concerns about millions. Yesterday, I had Surjit Bhalla discussing DeMon. He explained 100 deaths in queues as people die in accident – so how is this different. He does not even know that an accident is an accident (not caused by a policy). ATMs deaths were caused by a policy. I don’t even understand how someone can come on a national channel and discuss this.
Part of the explanation may come from Minister Nitin Gadkari who said recently that we have always been a party of the opposition, more accustomed to agitating on the streets, rather than governing. After almost five years of being in power, senior functionaries often appear angry, frustrated, filled with a sense of grievance and victimhood. The promise made on the campaign trail was, You gave them sixty years; give us sixty months. That the electorate did, with chaandi ka varak on the mithai, a clean majority. The other promise was, We will tender our Report Card, studded with achievements. That the people are now waiting for.
