Israel's response to Iran's retaliatory attack was relatively small and also downplayed by Tehran. But there are factors that could jeopardise this perceived reprieve.
The 125 APAs include 86 Unilateral APAs (UAPAs) and 39 Bilateral APAs (BAPAs). The total number of APAs since the start of the APA programme has risen to 641, with 506 UAPAs and 135 BAPAs.
In nutshell, Modi’s work for poor people is really helping them. They are really getting money directed to spend on them. It means that the opposition will have hard time even in 2024 and many state elections. Fo poor, government aid and low inflation are very important. Also income from farming is only part of total income of villagers, other government grants/schemes for their welfares and microfinances for small businesses are helping them to live well.
If they are living so well, why is rural demand so low? Why are low-cost FMCG goods not selling?
Once upon a time, economists were recognized for original ideas and it took a long while before their theories panned out in the real world, and for people to even make a judgment. Today, an award is given to an ‘experimental’ approach to ‘alleviate poverty’!! Also the Nobel is so well advertised that real awards that matter in the subjects (Fields, etc) have been relegated to second tier, an irony. Generalists over expertise, multi-disciplinary skills over specialized skills in any one area and so on. Lowest common denominator wins, happens when science mimicks politics.
If the voters voted for Modi/BJP because “In 2014, that commonality was Narendra Modi’s promise of the good days—low inflation, reduction in corruption, development and prosperity.”, then why they voted overwhelmingly for the BJP in 2019, when the economy was in very bad shape? In 2014, that commonality was Narendra Modi’s promise of the good days—low inflation, reduction in corruption, development and prosperity.Because of “surgical” and “Balakot” strikes against Pakistan? If so, then the economists are right that the voters don’t care for economy, social spending, etc! You say people voted for toilets?” What good are the toilets without water connection? What good are the free gas cylinders when people have no money to refill them? And how many people received pucca houses?
Shivam proves a point about him- when he is not exorcised by ghost of Modi, he comes out with balanced and nuanced writings. This is a far better piece than any of his earlier ones where main focus was on Modi bashing. BJP won simply because voters now see in Modi a decisive leader who is not corrupt and can take many daring, if not necessarily right decisions. Besides, his initiatives reached people directly and in a non corrupt ways. In contrast, Congress proved that it has nothing to offer except criticize Modi. This was enough to get that little extra swing for a landslide victory in a first past the pole system. To much dismay of Shivam, this will also be repeated in 2024!
In a democracy social spending is a given. Difference may happen in nitty gritties. Voters also take them for granted. Unless a party deviates too much from this they will continue to vote for religion and caste.
“Anyone who travelled out of Delhi in the Lok Sabha elections met voters who said they were voting for Modi because he gave them toilets and pucca houses, just as there were many who said they were happy about the Balakot airstrikes on Pakistan.” I have read this sentence before. Mostly it is from “Shekhar Gupta’s after 2019 election column”? ‘Plagiarising’ within a publication? Never heard of it. 🙂 I hope ThePrint takes action.
Shivam We..zzzzzz……….. How is it possible for a prolific armchair writer of atleast 1000 useless words * 3 times a week to go out, meet people and do real journalism?
Rahulji lost the election because he listened to a hare brained idea by Abhijit. Abhijit spoiled Rahuljis original idea and put mumbo jumbo which confused Indian people especially muslims women OBCs Dalits Tibetans jains Christian’s Kashmiris etc. But looks like Abhijit took Rahuls idea to Nobel committee and won the prize.
We don’t have Muslim, Christian. Just we have some Vatican and Arab Stooges.
UPA I gave India its best five economic years. The 2008 GFC signalled that a lot of irrational exuberance was partly the author of those boom years. It came towards the end of the term, the swift replacement of Shivraj Patil by Shri P Chidambaram, took the sting out of 26 / 11, The farm loan waiver helped. So one should not discount economic factors as the determinant of electoral results. Incumbents would do well to remember that verity.
UPA 1 listened to Rahuljis ideas. So the results were glorious. UPA 2 listened to MMS and chidambarams ideas. That’s why results were disastrous. Not only was MMS ideas stupid and caused inflation Chidambarams unbridled corruption caused Rahulji to be crushed electorally.
In all probability BJP itself was not sure it would win so handsomely. After the result the leadership might have heaved a sigh of relief for their arrow, shot in darkness, having hit the target. Sab ulta pulta hai…Trump, Brexit, Modi 2.0 with such huge margin.

“Data often hides more than it reveals.”
All the data scientists of the world died just so that they could roll in their graves after reading this statement.
Data is just that, data. It’s how you read it. Interpretation is everything in data and statistics.
A.Banerjee ditched his wife and had relationship with his student behind her back. The first wife lost the only child she had.
It is after a very long time the author said something good about Modi, although he sighed a very heavy heart.

This is the result when economists get into political analysis.
