(Reuters) – A fire at Finnish top-tier side IF Gnistan’s Oulunkyla Stadium on Saturday has gutted facilities and left the club without a place to play for the rest of the season.
Gnistan, which can be loosely translated as “spark” in English, saw their stadium’s main stand, as well as the club’s storage facilities, dressing rooms, and all the property inside, destroyed.
The club, who were promoted this season to the top Veikkausliiga, lost all their equipment and had to postpone their upcoming home match against IFK Mariehamn on Sunday.
“It is very unlikely that we’ll play at the field. This is a terrible tragedy; all the equipment and everything is burnt, and the men’s and women’s teams have nothing at the moment,” club chair Risto Murto told Finnish broadcaster YLE.
Gnistan are now searching for an alternative venue to play the remainder of the season.
The fire did not cause any injuries.
