Doctor did not do a full check-up, discharged him with minor first aid. DM calls it lapse and admits he could’ve been saved, family says it’s a conspiracy.

Unnao, Uttar Pradesh: A day after the father of the teenager who was allegedly raped by BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar died in judicial custody, ThePrint has learnt that the doctor who first examined him at the district hospital discharged him with minor first aid. He also gave a medical report saying that the man was “fit for custody” and had sustained only “simple injuries”, despite several visible injuries including abrasions and cuts on his body.

On 3 April, the teenager’s father was allegedly dragged out of his house, tied to a neem tree and thrashed by Atul Singh, brother of Sengar, and his accomplices, who were threatening him to withdraw the application to press rape charges. He was allegedly beaten up for an hour before the police reached the spot. The men had reportedly fled the spot by then, leaving the teenager’s father behind.

According to sources, the doctor at the hospital did not bother to carry out a thorough medical check-up, despite him complaining of nausea and body pain. The man sustained 18 injury marks on his chest, shoulder, back, scalp, feet and knees.

A police officer on duty told ThePrint that since the teenager’s father was visibly unwell, they requested the doctor to not discharge him. However, the doctor insisted that he be taken to jail. Three days after the examination, he died.

He died of septicaemia

According to the postmortem report, the cause of death was leakage in the large intestine, which led to septicaemia or poisoning.

It is only on Sunday that an ultrasound was conducted, which also did not help diagnose the liver enlargement that led to delayed treatment and the man’s death.

“He sustained over 18 injuries, and was hit severely in the abdomen, which may have led to severe internal injuries and a puncture in the large intestine. A nerve in the intestine started leaking, and as its fluid spread, it became septic, which then led to his death,” a doctor who carried out the postmortem told ThePrint.

Injuries the man sustained include multiple abrasions, right from the arm (measuring 15×5 cm), stitched-up wounds next to the eye, an abrasion on the chest measuring 12 cm, on the back measuring 11×3 cm, a severe injury 2 cm below the shoulder blade, and abrasions on the buttocks measuring 12×15 cm.

Lapse, negligence, or conspiracy?

Ravi Kumar N.G., the district magistrate, called it a “lapse” on the part of the doctors.

“It is strange that even the ultrasound could not diagnose liver enlargement. If medical attention was given at the right time, he could have been saved,” he said.

Police authorities, meanwhile, have labelled it negligence. Unnao SP Pushpanjali Devi said: “He was taken to the district hospital from the spot where the brawl broke out on 3 April. However, he was discharged after minor first aid was given to him. He was then shifted to the jail hospital, where he again started complaining of abdomen pain and nausea, so he was shifted to the district hospital again the next day, where he passed away during treatment.”

But family members have alleged something much more sinister, calling it a conspiracy.

“The MLA got my father killed. We could all see that he could not even walk… how could the doctor discharge him in that condition? He did it because he was given orders from above,” the teenager who was allegedly raped said.

“This is murder. He was tied to a neem tree and beaten up mercilessly. When he fainted, the men threw water at him and then beat him up more. They thrashed him for over an hour. How could the doctor then deem him fit for custody? They told me they will get my father killed, and they have done it.”

The teenager’s mother alleged that instead of being taken to the hospital directly from the spot where he was thrashed, he was taken to the police station and was not given any medical treatment.

“The incident happened at 6 pm and my husband was taken to the hospital only at 2 am. He was lying down on the bench at the police station writhing in pain. No one even gave him a glass of water or blanket. It is only after an order came from above that he was shifted to the hospital,” she said.

The state government has announced a magisterial probe into the matter, and three police officials have been suspended for negligence.
