Islamabad: Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday said the person who solves the Kashmir issue will be worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize, days after a resolution was submitted in Parliament endorsing him for the prestigious award, citing his “efforts to de-escalate” tensions with India.

“I am not worthy of the Nobel Peace prize. The person worthy of this would be the one who solves the Kashmir dispute according to the wishes of the Kashmiri people and paves the way for peace & human development in the subcontinent,” the premier tweeted.

Khan’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf also tweeted the prime minister’s statement in Hindi in an unusual move.

On 2 March, a resolution was submitted in Pakistan’s National Assembly Secretariat stating that Khan’s decision of releasing Indian Air Force pilot Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman has de-escalated the hostility between Pakistan and India.

According to the resolution, Khan “acted responsibly” in the current tension and “deserves the Nobel Peace Prize”.

After the Pulwama attack, the Indian Air Force carried out a counter-terror operation, hitting what it said was a JeM training camp in Balakot, deep inside Pakistan on 26 February. The next day, Pakistan retaliated with a large air formation, comprising 24 fighter jets, including F-16s.

Varthaman, who was in one of the eight MiG-21s that took on the invading Pakistan Air Force jets and shot down an F-16, was captured by Pakistan.

Khan during a joint session of Parliament on 28 February announced to release the IAF pilot as a “gesture of peace” and the “first step” to open negotiations with India.

Varthaman was released at the Wagah border on Friday.

  1. whenever india has tried to make a rapprochement with pakistan they have always back stabbed examples being kargil and all the terror incedents like phulwama uri etc. they still have plenty of terrrorist training camps. in this atmosphere believing imran khan who is dancing on pak army tunes it will be suicidal to take imran khan at his word. he should realise that this is not a game of cricket. it is best to play a waiting game until pakistan has to surrender pok .

  2. I can solve the Kashmir problem in a minute:

“India should accept that POK is Pakistan’s, and Pakistan should accept that India occupied Kashmir is India’s. Period.”

Send my Nobel Prize to THE PRINT, I will pick it up from their office.

  3. “ Solving Kashmir “ could be left to the wisdom of future generations, as Paramount Leader Deng suggested to PM Rajiv Gandhi, for the boundary dispute, opening the way to normalising the rest of the relationship. Perhaps India and Pakistan could attempt a more limited rapprochement, precluding war, and enlarging economic cooperation, breathing life into SAARC. On our side, that would also require a more humane approach in Kashmir. 2. Time will tell how sincere and effective PM Imran Khan is, but he is saying all the right things.

  4. 1. I think this is a very interesting news report. India should support this suggestion for award of Noble Peace Prize to Pakistan PM Imran Khan only if Imran Khan creates atmosphere conducive for return of peace to the Kashmir valley. This can happen if PM of Pakistan and the Army’s top brass in Pakistan together show readiness to dismantle the terror camps of JeM, LeT, JuD, Pakistani Taliban and many other not-so-known terror outfits. 2. Kashmir issue can be easily solved once the activities of the abovementioned terror outfits are minimized and the so-called separatists of Kashmir recognize that they have no role to play in new environment of terror-free Kashmir. Let us hope for the best!
