‘What next? Wear saffron to Parliament?’ Oppn mocks ban on ‘unparliamentary’ words

The Lok Sabha secretariat has come out with a booklet ahead of the Monsoon Session which disapproves of certain words like ‘shakuni’, ‘vinash purush’, ‘baal buddhi’ and even the commonly-used ‘ashamed’, ‘abused’ and ‘betrayed’.

New Delhi: Opposition parties have severely criticised the ban on certain words from being used in Parliament, with leaders asking if they now have to enter the House wearing saffron.

“Today they are saying certain words can’t be used. Tomorrow they will ask us to enter the premises in a saffron dress. We have a rules committee in Parliament. They are making a second republic by bringing such rules,” said Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.

In a new booklet released by the Lok Sabha secretariat, the following words are now banned — “jumlajeevi”, “baal buddhi”, “Covid spreader” and “Snoopgate” and even the commonly used “ashamed”, “abused”, “betrayed”, “corrupt”, “drama”, “hypocrisy” and “incompetent”.

These words will be considered unparliamentary in both Houses, the booklet has said.

The booklet comes ahead of the Monsoon session beginning 18 July, during which words like “anarchist”, “Shakuni”, “dictatorial”, “taanashah”, “taanashahi”, “Jaichand”, “vinash purush”, “Khalistani” and “khoon se kheti” would also be expunged if used in debates or otherwise.

The Lok Sabha secretariat has further listed the words “dohra charitra”, “nikamma”, “nautanki”, “dhindora peetna” and “behri Sarkar” as unparliamentary expressions.

Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge defiantly said party members would speak the words that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had used in his parliamentary career. “We will tell him what words he used in debates. He himself has used these words… why does he feel it’s inaccurate?” said the Opposition leader of Rajya Sabha.

Trinamool Congress member Derek O’ Brien said he would definitely use “ashamed, abused, betrayed, corrupt, hypocrisy and incompetent”.

He dared to be suspended as he would be “fighting for democracy”.
