New Delhi: Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday refused to comment on the progress being made in the formation of a new government in Maharashtra.

Her response came as Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut exuded confidence that a government led by his party will be in place by next month in Maharashtra. He said the picture will become clear in the next two days.

“No comments,” Gandhi said in Parliament House when reporters posed questions on the political situation in Maharashtra.

President’s rule was imposed in Maharashtra on November 12 amid a stalemate over government formation after the assembly polls last month.

In the October 21 Maharashtra polls, the BJP-Sena saffron alliance won 105 and 56 seats respectively in the 288-member assembly. The Congress and the NCP, pre-poll allies, bagged 44 and 54 seats respectively.

However, failing to evolve a consensus over the chief minister’s post, the two saffron parties parted ways, with the Sena exploring the possibility of tying up with the Congress-NCP.

  1. Why should she waste her time in making comments? She has got an unexpected bonanza- shared power in state like Maharashtra, when everyone was anticipating total decimation of Congress. Sharad Pawar is basking in hay, the biggest gainer. The Shiv Sena can also rejoice having got released from the bear hug of the BJP- but this is a short-lived joy. How long this government will last is anybody’s guess. If it lasts its full tenure, it would be a miracle and that miracle will happen only at the cost of the Sena. The first price they have to pay is to concede NCP’s demand of two and half years’ CM post. Many more will follow. It is an illusion that the Sena will be heading this government. The real power will vest with Sharad Pawar and Sonia Gandhi.

  2. She did not “refuse” comment. Like the Sena and Raut, she also REALLY DOES NOT KNOW. Pawar is playing top class Poker, and no one can even guess at the cards he holds.
