New Delhi: Gujarat Congress leader Hardik Patel quit the party on Wednesday.

The state’s working president announced his resignation on Twitter and said he was confident his colleagues and the people of Gujarat would welcome this decision. “I believe after this step, I will be able to work for Gujarat in a more positive manner in the future,” he said.

It was evident earlier this month that all was not well between the Patidar leader and the state unit when Patel edited the party’s name out of his Twitter bio.

He also did not attend the Congress’s brainstorming session, ‘Chintan Shivir’, in Udaipur last weekend.

The politician, who rose to prominence with protests for Patidar reservation in 2015, is ready to fight the upcoming Gujarat elections, scheduled this year.

He told ThePrint last week: “I have 32 cases against me.” “As far as the Congress is concerned, I have never expected anything from them. And I don’t care. I have the support of people and that’s what matters. But honestly, not everyone in the Congress has given me support. But I have no hard feelings against them.”

Patel was arrested in 2020 for sedition after the violent Patidar agitation in Gujarat killed at least 10 people. He has since been released on bail.
