Roy is known to shoot his mouth off and has often been criticised for behaving more like a BJP leader rather than the Governor of state.

Governor of Tripura Tathagata Roy made a major faux-pas Thursday by announcing on Twitter that former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee had passed away.

Roy even wrote a small tribute for Vajpayee, calling him a “silver-tongued orator” and a “very bright star on India’s political firmament”.

Minutes later, though, Roy realised his blunder and tweeted an apology, saying he believed something “told by an all-India TV channel”. He also deleted his previous tweet on Vajapee.

The 93-year-old Vajpayee has been admitted in the All Indian Institute of Medical Sciences since 11 June, after he was diagnosed with a kidney tract infection. Over the past 24 hours, AIIMS has stated his condition to be critical and he is on a ventilator.

Roy is known to shoot his mouth off, with his spontaneous and often inappropriate comments on social media landing him in trouble. Well-known for his extreme views, Roy has often been criticised for behaving more like a BJP leader rather than the Governor of state.

However, he isn’t the only political leader who made a misinformed announcement about another’s death.

On 23 March, 1979, former Prime Minister Moraji Desai broke the news of the death of veteran politician Jayaprakash Narayan, leader of the JP movement, in Lok Sabha. However, 30 minutes later, former Janata Party president Chandra Shekhar announced on the loudspeaker of the hospital where Narayan was admitted that he was still alive.

“I am sorry I tweeted something upon being told by an all-India TV channel. I had taken it to be authentic. There has so far been no official announcement. I have deleted my tweet.Sorry again
