New Delhi: Sonia Gandhi has communicated to her party colleagues that she is stepping down as the interim party president, following a letter written to her by at least 23 party leaders demanding a leadership overhaul.

“She has asked to communicate to the Congress Working Committee (CWC) members that she doesn’t want to continue and is stepping down,” said a source.

Sonia’s move comes ahead of the CWC meeting slated for Monday, where there is expected to be a call for a new leader to take on the role of party president.

“The leadership will be further discussed at the CWC meeting,” another source added.

Congress’ chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala, however, said there has been no such official communication about leadership change. “Mrs. Gandhi hasn’t given any such quote or interview to anyone about leadership change,” Surjewala told reporters outside the Congress office Sunday.

Move after letter causes stir

Sonia’s move comes after several prominent leaders wrote to her demanding a “full time and effective leadership”. They also sought a leadership that is both “visible” and “active” in the field, and called for elections to be conducted for CWC membership.

Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, party MPs and former Union ministers Anand Sharma, Kapil Sibal, Manish Tewari and Shashi Tharoor are among the prominent signatories.

Former chief ministers and Union ministers including Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, M. Veerappa Moily, Prithviraj Chavan, P.J. Kurien, Ajay Singh, Renuka Chowdhury and Milind Deora among others have also signed on the letter.

  1. I believe Priyanka & Rahulji should be be given a stronger shadow exposure to learn from more mature party leaders aka GULAM NABI AZAD, MANISH TEWARI, SHASHI THAROOR, KAPIL SIBAL, to consolidate party organisational machinery!

  2. Mr Amarinder Singh spoke about the family’s “selfless commitment and unimaginable sacrifices”.
Mr. Baghel said “Soniaji and Rahulji are the beacons of light”.
Isn’t this proof enough for those who are questioning the Gandhi Family’s leadership?

    • Sara rupaiya waise bhi BJP kha rahi hai. More than 90% of donations from companies from Electoral bonds scheme is going to your party. That has enabled you to get swanky new district level offices which look more like 3-4 star hotels. And there is a reason Adani, Ambanis, wealth has sky rocketed in last few years. Akela Main hi khaonga kisi aur ko nahin khaane doonga.

  3. Most one sideed Journalism. This is not Journalism. We regret this type of Journalism. Like wire, Like NDTV. Like print media all support Congress party. This is not fare for Journalism.Thanks.

    • You need to do a better job as BJP IT cell member. The least you should be doing is first reading the article you are planning to copy paste your comment on. You may find that you need 2-3 different comments at minimum for them to make some sense wrt the given article.

  4. Do not prop up Priyanka’s name as she carries Vadra baggage, she is arrogant and would do more damage than good to the party standing.
Let Rahul take over as President but make Sachin Pilot be the Working President with free room to call the shots. Alternatively, to accomodate old guard let Ashok Gehlot be the WP, and Pilot take over as CM, Rajasthan.
Deora, Jatin Prasad … shud be given important rolls, why not Baghel as well.
Paper tigers like Anand Sharma, Sibal etc shud stay away.
But for survival Nehru- Gandhi scion must head the party else it will disintegrate.

  5. Now watch a drama unfold, which will hoist another nehru clan member getting hoisted as the leader. We have seen this movie before.

  6. Good. Sonia has served the party well but the new changed landscape asks for more cutthroat leadership against the Modi Shah gundagardi

  7. Will senior Mrs Gandhi now give up her inheritance to sacrifice for the country? Maybe it is time for Mrs Vadra to sacrifice and take up her inheritance & be annointed as Congress Chief.

  8. Congress can yet be THAT party, possibly the only one at National level, to challenge the BJP if it promotes pluralism as opposed to secularism ( not possible as long as The Constitution and Govt policies discriminate based on castes and religions) and work towards a uniform civil code with and intent of purpose towards development.

  9. Now, as Sonia resigns, there will be a noise from the loyalists of the dynasty to give a chance to Vadras. But if there is election for the President of Congress, and Sonia doesn’t want her family in race, She will be able to found another Man Mohan Singh type dummy for the post

  10. Smt Sonia Gandhi’s public conduct has always been impeccable. During a decade of absolute power, she said / did nothing to undermine the PM’s aura, although everyone knew where the buck stopped. If there is one thing RG should have learnt from his mother, it would be a strong work ethic.

  11. To Laugh out loudly:

Rahul: I don’t want to be the Congress President.
    Pinki: I don’t want too!

Sonia: No my children, No; don’t shatter my dreams, at least now.

Rahul & Pinki: Then you tell Mamma

Sonia: Look, it is politics; none knows how trickery works. Patel bro, uncle Chidambar, Manmohan bhai, ComedianTharoor uncle, our little Venu, Surja, Little-head Chinnatthala, all minority people etc. are thinking day and night for us. Be hopeful; who knows one of them gets a trick! These people know the value of our Gandhi-tail; be hopeful kids; be hopeful

Pinki and Rahul: What should we do, Mamma?

Sonia: When I step down, our people will ask you…And you should agree to it as if you are caring for them. How can we say it is for ourselves!

Rahul & Pinki: OK mamma; got it. You are too good Mama…

    🙂 🙂 🙂

    (Humor intended)
