New Delhi: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Wednesday called Union home minister Amit Shah the “background hero” (Nepath ke Nayak) of Indian politics and said he was a rare combination of “politics and spirituality”.

“Politics has now become synonymous with cheating, lying, and dirty things,” Singh said at the launch of Shabdansh: Amit Shah Ke Chuninda Bhashan (Select Speeches of Amit Shah), a compilation of 28 major speeches Shah has made in the past three years.

“People think that politicians only hanker after power, and know nothing. Amit bhai is trying to set the record straight. Unlike what people think about politicians, he reads a lot. He is a combination of politics and spirituality.  Apart from politics and policies, he has spoken on Shankaracharya too. This brings out his spiritual ideas.”

Edited by Shiwanand Dwivedi, the 300-page book includes speeches by Shah on Kashmir and the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution, the National Register of Citizens and the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, Hindutva icon Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, and Shankaracharya.

Calling Shah his ‘anuj’ (younger brother), Singh said: “I am invited here to release a compilation of speeches delivered by my younger brother. I am fortunate enough to do so”.

Shah’s speeches were diverse, Singh said, adding: “He reads and researches a lot.”

“Amit bhai is now the home minister of the country. And every word the home minister speaks is crucial and important. I have been home minister, so I understand this,” Singh said in his address. “His speeches on national security issues and the abrogation of Article 370 in Kashmir were excellent, and the opposition also agreed on this.”

‘Went to jail but never created hue and cry’

Singh also took a dig at the Congress, which held protests across India after Sonia and Rahul Gandhi were summoned for questioning before the Enforcement Directorate.

In his address, Singh claimed both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Shah had faced investigative agencies with “composure” and “never created a ruckus”

“Amit bhai‘s life is full of experiences, a prayogshala (laboratory), where he has passed through so many phases, spent nights in prison, faced investigating agencies, but never wailed over or created a hue and cry causing a nationwide protest (Par unhone haye tauba nahi machayi, saare desh mein andolan nahin kiya),” Singh said.

He added: “When the investigative agencies called him (Amit Shah) and wherever they called him, he went. When he was sent to jail, he went there also (Unhe jail ki hawa bhi khani padi hai). But he did not cause a furore”.

Ultimately the truth came out into the open, as he believed it would, Singh said. “Every such challenge made Shah stronger and fearless,” he added.
