Congress president accuses Modi govt of making country insecure for women, says its not paying attention to the bill.

New Delhi: Congress president Rahul Gandhi Tuesday pledged to support the Women’s Reservation Bill if it is tabled, even as he accused the Narendra Modi government of not paying any attention to legislation.

“If the current government tables the women’s reservation bill in the Parliament, I will support them,” Rahul said at the Mahila Adhikar Sammelan called by All India Mahila Congress at Talkatora Stadium in New Delhi. “But if they don’t, I promise to get the bill passed when our government comes to power in 2019.”

The Congress president also promised to ensure greater representation of women within the organisation.

“It won’t happen in a few days. It will take time but my idea is to give 50 per cent of party positions to women,” he announced. He also urged the women leaders to come up with a list of names, who he said he would personally get accommodated at various levels in the main organisation.

He further accused the government of making the country insecure for women.

“The Prime Minister doesn’t speak a word when girls are raped in Bihar and other states,” Rahul said. “A BJP MLA rapes a girl in UP but the PM doesn’t speak. We didn’t know that his slogan of Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao was to save our daughters from the BJP.”

Strengthening frontal organisations

In recent times, Rahul has attended nearly all of the conferences organised by the party’s frontal organisations. This is part of the Congress’ larger strategy to strengthen the frontal units and make them election ready in the coming months.

By reaching out to the workers, Rahul wants to send out a message that he is willing to listen to them and make them feel that they all have a role in ensuring the party performs better.

At the Mahila Adhikar Sammelan, he promised to give preference to women while distributing party tickets at every level. Senior leaders like Motilal Vora, Ashok Gehlot, Randeep Surjewala and Mahila Congress president Sushmita Dev were also present in the meeting.
