New Delhi: Congress president Rahul Gandhi Monday visited former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee at AIIMS.

The 93-year-old Vajpayee was admitted to the hospital for routine check-up and investigations, the BJP said in a statement in New Delhi.

Congress sources claimed that it was an impromptu decision by Gandhi, who addressed an OBC convention of the Congress party earlier in the day. The sources said Gandhi then returned to the Congress office to meet Congress Seva Dal workers. From the party office he went to his residence and within few minutes left for AIIMS.

Gandhi’s visit came before any senior BJP leader, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party president Amit Shah.

Vajpayee will be under the supervision of AIIMS director Randeep Guleria, the BJP statement said, adding he has been admitted on doctors’ advice.

Vajpayee was the NDA Prime Minister between 1998 and 2004. As his health deteriorated, he withdrew from public life and has been confined to his residence for many years.
