The changes in the council of ministers are long expected, considering the need to strengthen BJP’s organisational base ahead of 2019 elections.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi could effect a cabinet reshuffle soon after the budget session of Parliament, BJP sources told ThePrint.

A rejig of the council of ministers is long expected, considering the need to strengthen BJP’s organisational base even as the Modi-led government enters the final year of its term.

According to the sources, several ministers may be relieved of their current responsibilities and asked to work for the party in the run-up to the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

While there are murmurs in the BJP headquarters about the possible cabinet reshuffle, senior leaders are tightlipped on the issue.

“Changes in the organisation as well as in the cabinet are a possibility ahead of the election year. But the final decision lies with the PM and no one else,” said a senior BJP leader.

Though no one in the party is openly discussing the names of those who may be given crucial roles in the organisation, the possibility a cabinet rejig is not being ruled out either.

The talks of possible changes have also started doing the rounds in the wake of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) seeking consensus from its MPs and workers on whether its alliance with BJP should continue or be cancelled.

Sources said the TDP legislature party was in favour of snapping ties with the BJP. The move followed after two TDP ministers at the Centre — Ashok Gajapathi Raju and Y.S. Chowdhary — threatened to step down.

TDP leaders have openly expressed their disappointment over the Centre’s alleged non-cooperation in the development of the state.

“We have been promised Rs 2,500 crore for the development of Amaravati as the capital city of Andhra Pradesh. Is it possible to build a world-class city with this meagre amount?” said a TDP leader.

The BJP sources also said that the party may recommend inclusion of a few important allies in the cabinet in the event of a rejig.

The BJP is focusing its energies on strengthening the organisation in the states where it is dependent on its allies.
