New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Jyotoraditya Scindia’s decision to change his Twitter description, dropping details of his past stint in Parliament and in the government, created a buzz Monday, starting speculation about his possible move away from Congress. The updated profile received wide traction on social media.

From “Former member of parliament, Guna (2002-2019) and former minister for power (I/C), MoS Commerce and Industry, MoS Communications, IT and Post”, Scindia’s profile on the microblogging site changed to “Public servant and cricket enthusiast”.

His bio does not mention Congress either.

Scindia, however, rebutted all such speculation, calling it “rumour-mongering”.

Speaking to ThePrint, he said, “This is all non-sense, I changed my bio a month ago as I got feedback on Twitter that it was too long, someone must’ve noticed it today. I have been working here in Delhi and Madhya Pradesh. This is just rumour mongering.”

The former Guna MP had resigned as the general secretary in-charge of Uttar Pradesh (west) in the aftermath of the party’s dismal Lok Sabha performance.

‘Showing unhappiness’

Some Congress leaders, however, said Jyotiraditya Scindia has been unhappy since Kamal Nath’s ascension as the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh last December, a post he had been angling for.

Though some of his nominees were accommodated in the government, said the sources, he doesn’t have much say in the government or in the state unit of the Congress either.

“But of course he is disgruntled,” a Congress insider close to Scindia told ThePrint. “He is communicating to the high command, Sonia (Gandhi) in particular, that he is unhappy. But there is no change in his political ideology,” said the person who did not wish to be named.

Scindia made the first show of his dissatisfaction in August, when he and many other young leaders such as Deepender Hooda and Jitin Prasada publicly aired their reservation against the party’s stand on the scrapping of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status.

He then followed up by challenging the Nath government in Madhya Pradesh over issues of farm loan waiver and flood relief. He even went as far as to back state cabinet minister Umang Singhar, who had said senior MP leader Digvijay Singh was running a proxy government in the state.

Scindia is said to be in talks with the top leadership of the BJP, Congress leaders had earlier told ThePrint.

‘Don’t read too much into it’

The Madhya Pradesh Congress, however, stands steadfastly behind Jyotiraditya Scindia.

“It is not an issue if he’s changed his status (Twitter bio),” said senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh. “Don’t read too much into it.”

“If he’s changed his old status, then he’s done the right thing,” said Madhya Pradesh Congress spokesperson Pankaj Chaturvedi.

“The BJP leaders questioning Scindia’s profile change should remember that a few days ago Shivraj (Singh Chauhan) also changed his status to the ‘common man of MP’,” another spokesperson Narendra Saluja tweeted.
