PM Narendra Modi and party chief Amit Shah have directed party workers to stop campaigning and instead help people in coastal regions of Gujarat move to safer places.

New Delhi: The BJP has temporarily suspended its election campaigning in Gujarat with Cyclone Ockhi likely to make a landfall in the state by Tuesday evening.

PM Narendra Modi and party chief Amit Shah have directed party workers to stop their campaign activities and instead help people in the coastal region move to safer places.

The first phase of the Gujarat assembly polls is due on 9 December.

According to the BJP’s campaign schedule, BJP president Amit Shah, Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje, Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari and party spokesperson Sambit Patra were to address public meetings and big rallies Tuesday.

The PM in his tweet said,” With #CycloneOckhi expected to make a landfall in Gujarat, I appeal to @BJP4Gujarat Karyakartas to focus on helping people across the state. Our Karyakartas should devote themselves to providing all possible assistance and stand shoulder to shoulder with fellow citizens.”

Amit Shah’s cancelled rallies were to be held in Rajula, Mahua and Shihor.

BJP leader Harsh Sanghvi said that his team will be helping people in Surat. “The need of the hour is to help people rather than asking for votes,” Sanghvi told ThePrint.

Sources in the party said that door-to-door campaigning and public meetings were cancelled around 10am Tuesday by the party top brass. The message has been communicated to the teams working in the region.

“In Surat, we have asked our cadre to help women and senior citizens to shift their belongings to a secure place,” said a senior leader.

The decision comes at a time when the party is engaged in its last phase of campaigning in the state.
