Maken is believed to be suffering from a ‘degenerating spinal cord’ issue. Congress leader P.C. Chacko denies reports of his resignation.

New Delhi: Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken left the country last week for a medical check-up, triggering speculation about his continuance in the post.

Maken is learnt to have a ‘degenerating spinal cord’ issue and is understood to need long treatment and rest.

P.C. Chacko, All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge of Delhi, denied media reports that Maken resigned on 13 September.

“He hasn’t given any resignation letter. He spoke to me and Rahulji (Congress President Rahul Gandhi). He has some health problem and has gone abroad for a medical check-up. He will be back on 22 September,” Chacko told ThePrint.

But sources maintain that Maken verbally offered to resign citing his long treatment.

Health issues for Congress

Maken was appointed president of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee in 2015, following a long feud with former chief minister Sheila Dikshit, who has also not been keeping well. The Delhi government approved her proposal for a heart surgery in France in August.

With both Maken and Dikshit likely to be out of action for a while, the Congress may find it difficult to put up a strong show in 2019 general elections, especially if it goes alone.

Maken has been opposed to any tie-up with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which has been eager to form an anti-Bharatiya Janata Party front in the national capital for the general elections. Many senior Congress leaders are in favour of an alliance with the AAP, but the party president has gone by the inputs of local leaders in Delhi.

Although the Rajouri Garden assembly bypoll and civic elections last year showed the AAP losing ground and the Congress recouping a little, the grand old party is still not in a position to regain its old glory in Delhi.

Maken’s indisposition is likely to start a fresh round of debate in the Congress on the issue of pre-poll alliance with the AAP.
