The booklet is likely to be released on 20 February and will compare important indicators under the NDA government with those under the UPA.

New Delhi: The Congress plans to release a booklet on the performance of the Narendra Modi government this month, titled ‘Four Wasted Years’.

The research department of the party, led by Rajya Sabha MP Rajeev Gowda, is currently preparing the document. “The date is not yet decided but most probably it would be on 20 February,” Gowda said.

The booklet will be released by former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and former finance minister P. Chidambaram at the Congress headquarters in New Delhi.

What it will contain

The Congress wants to use the booklet to highlight the failures of the Modi government on the socio-economic front.

The document will feature important social and economic indicators such as GDP, agriculture, employment, fuel prices, inflation, and public sector banks’ bad loans, among other things. The Congress will also compare this performance to the UPA government’s, in a bid to back its claim that the Modi government has ‘failed’.

The Congress plans to make the booklet available to all party leaders and workers, who will be asked to highlight these points to voters in their areas. It hopes that in the run-up to the 2019 general elections, this will help sway the people’s mandate in the grand old party’s favour.

Not the first time

The Congress has released similar booklets to target the Modi government’s policies in the past.

In 2017 alone the party launched three booklets at different times on demonetisation, the farm crisis, and national security.

The Congress’s most recent attacks on the Modi government have been on the issue of employment generation. Party president Rahul Gandhi, in fact, asked Modi questions on the issues of job growth and his promises, after the latter’s speeches in both houses of Parliament on Wednesday.

Going forward, it plans to continue this approach of asking difficult questions in public, and bringing out information booklets to question the government’s claims.
