The Election Commission has suggested changes in at least 10 other campaign videos of political parties.

The Congress may have scored a point with the Election Commission ordering the BJP to drop the word ‘Pappu’ from its latest campaign video, but videos of other political parties are also under scrutiny.

At least 10 electronic media campaign advertisements of different political parties are under the EC scanner presently.

EC officials told ThePrint that the Gujarat Media Certification and Monitoring Committee (MCMC) has “suggested changes” in 10 videos submitted to it for pre-certification.

Amid a raging video war in election-bound Gujarat, as many as 250 videos from political parties have come so far to the state media committee for pre-certification. Of these, 240 have already been certified for release by the committee, while suggestions for changes have been made in 10 cases so far.

Replacing the word ‘Pappu’ to refer to Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi in the BJP campaign video was one such suggestion. The BJP has replaced the word ‘Pappu’ in its 49-second election video with ‘Yuvraj’.

The amended video was released on the Gujarat BJP’s Facebook page Wednesday after it was cleared by the committee.

All audio-visual campaign material has to be cleared and pre-certified by the MCMC before it can be used by a political party.

The committee, which comprises of the state Chief Electoral Officer and officers from the Indian Information Service and Doordarshan, among others, either pre-certifies the video within 24 hours or makes suggestions for changes. The suggestions depend on complaints the committee may have received or any other concerns raised about the material.

The details of the complainants and objections raised are kept confidential and are treated as ‘privileged information’.
