A total of seven schemes were launched as part Gram Swaraj Abhiyan targeting 16,850 backward villages across the country.

New Delhi: Unveiling the four-year report card of the BJP-led government, party chief Amit Shah Tuesday termed the implementation of the Gram Swaraj Abhiyan rural outreach programme as PM Narendra Modi’s tribute to Dalit icon B.R. Ambedkar.

A total of seven schemes were launched as part of this rural campaign targeting 16,850 backward villages across the country.

“All the villages that were benefitted by the government schemes have at least 40 per cent Dalit population,” Shah said.

Shah’s remark is seen as a fresh attempt to reach out to Dalits ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Shah, flanked by rural development minister Narendra Singh Tomar and MoS rural development Ram Kripal Yadav put out figures of beneficiaries of schemes including Ujjawala, Indradhanush, Jan Dhan, Bima Suraksha, Saubhagya, Jeevan Jyoti Bima, among others.

Plan for 2019 polls

The BJP chief said that these schemes will be extended to 45,000 villages.

“By 15 August 2018, we will cover all 115 aspirational districts,” added Shah who also claimed that these developments are being monitored real-time on a portal.

Shah said that from 14 April until 5 May, the rural outreach programme was intensified as all MPs, MLAs and councillors spent two nights in the villages in their respective areas.

Even 12,000 government officials also stayed for nights in the villages, Shah said.

Key facts
