New Delhi: Prime time news Thursday had a lot of options to take its pick from — vaccine rollout plan in India to CBSE’s announcement on holding board examinations in May.

NDTV anchor Sonal Mehrotra Kapoor compared all the latest Covid-19 vaccine candidates.

“Now that India is just a few days away from an expected approval on vaccines, let’s do a head to head comparison on the front runners. It is Pfizer vs Oxford,” she said.

She compared vaccines on four basic counts — efficacy, technology, storage and price.

Pfizer’s vaccine boasts of an efficacy of 95 per cent, compared to 70 per cent for Oxford’s vaccine. This is because of the different technologies the vaccines use. “Pfizer uses the new technology called the messenger RNA or mRNA, this is a new way and was used during SARS epidemic as well,” Kapoor said.

“This doesn’t make it any cheaper. The Oxford vaccine costs a few dollars only whereas Pfizer vaccine costs about $18 to $19 per dose,” she added.

On Times Now, anchor Meghna Deka was concerned with the board examinations to be held in May now.

“Even though 30 per cent of the syllabus has been reduced for class 10 and 12, the fact that the students haven’t had face to face interactions with their teachers, is that going to be something hampering their preparedness?” Deka asked.

Vijay Dutta, principal, Modern School, Delhi, said, “This is going to be a big bother and a big concern for us because this time they haven’t had face to face interactions with us so we are not very certain about how well they are prepared.”

He also spoke about the serious psychological impact on students.

“They haven’t practised much in the written form, we haven’t seen their notebooks, only online. Their written practice hasn’t been adequate. So their question papers will have to be prepared with that in mind,” he added.

Meanwhile, Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami took a moment to thank his viewers for their support.

Goswami said, “I feel blessed to have your support. The truth is that each time I try to express my gratitude to you somewhere I horribly fall short of saying the words accurately enough.”

He continued, “So please forgive me if there is a disconnect in my sentences and my real emotions.”

On Zee News, anchor Sudhir Chaudhary ended the year on a sombre note, talking about pollution due to plastic. He said, “This year 150 crore masks will be thrown in the oceans and seas… The very thing which was used as a weapon to fight, will now increase pollution in the sea.”

He added that doctors had advised using cloth masks instead of plastic ones. He said, “First the world encouraged use of plastic and encouraged it world over. And now when Covid-19 hit, even then plastic masks were made.”
