Public opinion in Kashmir has now been pushed away from India

Not Narendra Modi, Amit Shah is the new face of Indian state for hurt and angry Kashmiris.

You know what’s afsos mithai?” I did not. But soon it transpired that I did. As a child I called it boodhi amma ke baal. Much later, I would learn the English name for it: candy floss. “For us Kashmiris, Article 370 was like afsos mithai. Lovely appearance, but you regret (afsos) as soon as you find out how little it contains.” I was speaking to Karim (all names changed), this young man in mid-30s with piercing eyes that bore a hole in my skin.

I was in Kashmir for three days, mainly to listen to apple-growers and to assess the damage to their crops. But Kashmiris won’t limit themselves to discussing apples. Not after 5 August this year. Kashmiris have always been very knowledgeable about politics, full of opinions and rich in metaphors. This time, they were more than eager to share their experience of the last 100 days with anyone they could trust. I was all ears.

Using afsos mithai as a metaphor for Article 370 does not mean that ordinary Kashmiris don’t mind its de-facto nullification or that Kashmiris love the post-370 “integration”. Quite the contrary. I did not come across even one coherent voice that supported the central government’s move. Finally, I asked a group of friends if they knew of any Kashmiri living in the Valley who supported the new policy. Pat came the reply, “Koi gadha bhi support nahin karega (Not even a donkey supports this policy)”. They were too sweeping, I thought. I wish I could speak to the few Kashmiri Pandits left in the Valley, but I could not ascertain their views. Our local host was a Pandit but was far too secular and liberal to represent the voice of the community. For the rest, the metaphor of afsos mithai meant that Kashmiris have moved beyond afsos.

No growth, no integration

I did not find any taker for the official rationale that nullification of Article 370 was the harbinger of development in Jammu and Kashmir. We met office-bearers of The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry to check this. Faheem, a suave, young businessman, summed up an hour-long conversation: “We don’t know whose development is being talked about. There has been a shutdown. We don’t have internet. There is no business. Yet, we are paying salaries to our employees and interest to banks, loan recoveries are going on. Where is the promised investment? We are not a part of any conversation about the economy. I can’t see our economy growing in the next 20 years.”

At least in the first 100 days in the Valley (this reading does not hold for Jammu or Ladakh), the big move on J&K has achieved the opposite of its stated objective.

Far from achieving a closer bond, it has resulted in a deeper, perhaps unbridgeable, emotional chasm. The entire spectrum of public opinion in the Kashmir Valley has been pushed away from India towards Pakistan, from politics of moderation to support for separatism, from Kashmiri identity to stronger Islamic identity. Far from furthering national integration, the new Kashmir doctrine may have caused irreparable damage to India’s national interests.

Middle ground has disappeared

Earlier the public opinion within the Valley ranged between moderates and separatists. Mainstream politicians from the Abdullah family occupied the moderate end that was pro-India. Mehbooba Mufti stood to their right, occasionally airing resentment against the Indian state, but well short of separatism. On the right extreme was the Hurriyat with its pro-Azadi and pro-Pakistan rhetoric.

The most visible effect of 5 August in the Valley is that the spectrum of opinion represented by Abdullahs and Muftis has been wiped out. The afsos articulated by Farooq Abdullah in his tearful appearance on national TV is now looked down upon. ‘Good riddance’ is the general sentiment about most of the mainstream politicians of the Kashmir Valley. Anyone who sets up a relationship with Delhi – someone who contested and won BDC elections, for example – earns the title of a ‘stooge’. Almost overnight, the middle ground – neither separatist nor assimilationist – has disappeared.

People try hard to hide their disenchantment. “Professor sahib, I used to read you and talk to my students about ‘the idea of India’. What should I teach them now?” This was a teacher in a small town. I had no answer.

My old friend Professor Dhar had a wry smile: “We Kashmiris used to joke that these Hindustanis are better than those Khans and Pathans. But now …”. And, after a pause, he looked away and muttered, “I must have been to Delhi dozens of times… This time when I landed there, it felt like a foreign country.”

Amit Shah vs Imran Khan

More than disenchantment, there is a raw anger at what Kashmiris see as an assault on their collective being.

Jameel, a young farmer, stood up in the middle of an involved discussion on the damages to apple-growers: “What has India given us, except dhokha every time?” I thought he was being rhetorical. But Irfan was not. A munshi with an apple trader, he first checked if I would mind him speaking. Once assured, he just folded his hands and said, “Aap hamein chhod kyon nahin dete (Why don’t you leave us alone)?” On being pressed for reasons, he said: “Main apna seena cheer kar kaise dikhaoon ki kitna dard hai (how do I tear my chest apart and show you my pain)?”

This pain has brought the Kashmiri Muslims close to Muslims in the rest of India for the first time. Earlier, their relationship was marked by mutual ignorance, indifference and even contempt. But now the Kashmiri Muslims believe that they are being persecuted not just because they are Kashmiris, but also because they are Muslims.

Kashmiris don’t talk much about Narendra Modi now. Amit Shah is the new face of the Indian state. For many young Kashmiris, the equation is Amit Shah versus Imran Khan. In this face-off, the Pakistani PM has gained in popularity. The video of his UN General Assembly speech with extensive references to Hindutva and Kashmir has gone viral among young Kashmiris. Since there is no internet, it is spreading through pen-drives and Bluetooth.

Kashmiris notice and talk about a contrast between the virtual absence of Kashmiri Muslims from the J&K Raj Bhavan and a generous presence of people with Kashmiri connect in the upper echelons of Pakistani establishment. A college student talked about choosing between India and Pakistan as if he was choosing a holiday destination.

‘The silence spells doom’

Is this pushing the public towards the militants? Hard to say, as I did not enjoy the kind of access needed to answer this question. Over the last three decades, Kashmiris have seen far too much violence to romanticise it. Everyone I spoke to condemned the recent killings of labourers and truck drivers from the rest of India. There were many who advised quiet acceptance of the inevitable. Our driver Akhtar was candid: “What can we Kashmiris do? There are more people in a single district of India than there are in the entire Valley.” But any talk of money fueling militancy or stone-pelting evokes a sharp response: “That’s nonsense. Who would willingly face bullets for any amount of money?” I detected a faint sympathy for the militants but couldn’t be sure.

Karim, who introduced me to afsos mithai, showed me the other end of the spectrum of public opinion in the Valley, his tongue as sharp as his intellect: “5 August has shattered the myth of India’s liberal democracy. People like you may continue to believe that we are opposed to only the BJP regime. The fact is that we are opposed to India. No one cares about 370 or 35A anymore. Now the narrative has shifted from Azadi to Pakistan.”

Then he turned to me: “How do I trust liberals like you? When liberals in the US opposed Vietnam, they refused conscription and paid the price. Pakistani jihadis, who you call terrorists, come here and give up their life for us. How many of you Indian liberals have suffered anything for our sake?” I had no answer.

There is a disturbing calm in the Kashmir Valley. Security deployment at every nook and corner has ensured that there is no open protest. There are no leaders on the ground.

Mind is a different field. Kashmiri mind is ticking away furiously. What could be the outcome, I asked another Kashmiri friend. “When there is a death in the family and someone close does not cry, that is a sign of deeper trouble. That is Kashmir after 5 August. If we could cry aloud, protest, things may have come back to some kind of normalcy. But this silence spells doom. Wait till the end of the winter,” he said.

Afsos mithai was long finished. I was holding the stick.

  1. The author is highly pathetic towards Kashmir, If Amit Shah had engineering Article 370 so skilfully, Imran Khan would’nt have been barking and yelling around this globe like a raped girl in public. So if the people of Kashmir think they can decide their future – they have the right to do so, But not at the expense of India being barter for their independence in the first place, The previous Cong -I destroyed the basic political fabric by always leaning on Article 370 and the UN, with fear under their pants, no guts to even come out of that Saree Power. If the people of Kashmir want to join Pakistan, its time they cross the border with their luggage. If they want a better life and future, its time for them to think out of that stupid box. and not live their happy life at the cost of the Indian taxpayer. Amit Shah knows far much better than that the Kashmirs think if their way can get through Imran Khan who is another joker and pawn with the Pakis Army and ISI.

  2. Typical Yogendra Yadav column. Needs no further comment. I am astounded that Kashmiri Muslims who are now over 99% in Kashmir, after the ethnic cleansing of late eighties and early nineties, feel “persecuted”! How should the residual non-kashmiris and Hindus feel?

  3. India is losing its name on every day basis at the world stage even as it is also harming the whole of India due to negative depiction of investment prospects from abroad. Pm Modi’s rules of six years has only worsening recrods to show such as lowest growth, highest unemployment and so on. In addition, the ruling classs finds security i maintaining status quo. They just decided not to join the RCEP, while they had spent years participating in its preparation. Politics remains hopelessly corrupt and unprincipled adn remains self serving. All said anddone, it is Mr. Modi on whom the people of india reposed their confidence by giving him landslide majoriy in the last electon. Therefore, Modijee must not squander his time by indulging in undemocratic adventurism like the snatching the special status provisions from Kashmir, or the so-called NCR of Assam and so on. He must br single-minded in his devotion to delivering on his Achchhe Din promise of 2014. As thingss stand, India has only been going downhill under his watch from where the Congress left off before him.

  4. THE RECENT MOVE ON KASHMIR IS THE MOST MACHAIVELLIAN OF THE MOVES WE HAVE SEEN SINCE 1947’S ACCESSION . AFTER ALL, VARIOUS CONGRESS GOVERNMENTS HAD, INSIDIOUSLY, HOLLOWED OUT ARTICLE 370 , WHICH WAS THERE ONLY FOR NAMESAKE, WHEN IT WAS SAID IT HAS BEEN ABROGATED IN BLATANT DISREGARD TO DEMOCRATIC NORMS VIOLATING THE SOUL &SPIRIT OF ACCESSION OF KASHMIR TO INDIA . J & K ‘S LEADING POLITICIANS , WHO HAD BRAVED THREATS FROM SEPARATISTS , ALSO TANGOED WITH DELHI ON THIS . SINCE 2013 WHEN LYNCHINGS BEGAN IN THE NAME OF THE COW AND BEEF & VULGARLY OTHERING OF MUSLIM STARTED AND SINCE PERPETRATORS SEEM TO BE EGGED ON BY LOCALLY POWERFUL POLITICIANS FROM THE RIGHT WING ALIENATION OF KASHMIRIS APPEAR TO HAVE ONLY INCREASED DESPITE AN OPPORTUNISTIC AND POLITICALLY IMMORAL COALITION BETWEEN THE PD & THE BJP. RIGHT WING POLITICIANS HAVE BEEN PEDDLING LIES AND BLATANT LIES IN REGARD TO KASHMIR USING THE NAME OF PATEL , WHO PILOTED 370 AND WHO WAS NOT IN DISAGREEMENT WITH NEHRU ON ARTICLE 370 , IF NOT IN AGREEMENT. BESIDES , THE ROLE OF SYAMA PRASAD MUKHERJEE, THE FOUNDER AND PROGENITOR OF THE BJP, IN THE AFFAIRS OF KASHMIR ARE BEING GLOSSED OVER & WHITEWASHED CONTRARY TO FACTS IN AN ATTEMPT TO MISLEAD THE IGNORAMUS OF WHOM THERE IS NO DEARTH WHEN IT COMES TO EMOTIONAL ISSUES . ONE HOPES A FRANKENSTEIN HAS NOT BEEN UNLEASHED IN KASHMIR

  5. From all articles I have read on what Kashmiris feel, the 1 thing I learn is they are one of the most racist group of people, and consider ppl from other states lower than them in racial hierarchy. Have a sense of privilege which was only strengthened by semi autonomy in the region.

  6. The ‘problem’ festered for over 70 years with no ‘solution’. Muslims in the Valley never accepted India, gleefully watched Pandits massacred raped and expelled, treated the Buddhists of Ladakh and Hindus and Sikhs of Jammu with contempt, set up businesses all over India, pelted the security forces with stones, burst crackers when Indian cricket team lost to Pakistan but happily accepted the huge subsides from the Indian exchequer as their birthright. And now that the BJP government is trying to change all that there are bleeding heart liberals complaining about lack of internet and detention of leaders as the death of Democracy!

    • Muslims in the Valley never accepted India… are you implying that Kashmir was forcefully assimilated from the beginning? That the land was integrated without the consent of the populace? this is treason indeed!!

      • With due respect.. before asking ” That the land was integrated without the consent of the populace?”, one is expected to gather some background info and read about the “princely states accession act” enforced by the british, post consultation with the 3 parties to partition (the leadership from the 2 proposed countries within british india, and the rulers of the princely states that were semi autonomously ruled by their respective royal families in lue of the taxes these families paid to the brits). Under this scheme, the rulers of each princely state were entitled to decide which side they wished to go with. The J&K state was ruled by Maharaja Hari Singh. He, for some reason, delayed the decision and decided to stay independent. The bunch of idiots that Pakis are, they read into these delays as a “conspiracy” by the maharaja to eventually go with the Indian side. They injected pakistan army and the lawless tribal fighters of the NWFP and FATA regions into the state and tried to take it by force. The Maharaja rushed to New Delhi, made a deal with Sardar Patel, signed the treaty of accession (which was his entitled privilege) favouring India and hence got military assistance from the Indian Army, who chased the lawless invaders back to what is now known as the LOC. The moral of the story is – the scheme of procedures prescribed and followed for the accession NEVER were democratic. Go ahead and challenge the very design of this scheme if you wish to. But think twice before termin anything as “treason” – coz this wasn’t treason for any other princely state’s accession! Hope I just put some sense and facts in your head. Peace!

  7. Has Kashmir ever seen 100 days without a single bullet being fired by security forces ? If the price for that is to keep the troublemakers away so be it. A lady was complaining about her father being in illegal detention she wanted the solution on TV, but would not go the courts.

No one had or even attempted to find the solution to Kashmir since 1947. It was an industry run at the cost of Indian taxpayer with a handful of beneficiaries and their paid supporters. They were so busy making money that even induction of cross border partners did not bother them.

The ethnic cleansing was overlooked and covered up without any legal action . The land so freed was openly grabbed, possibly land records changed with connivance of the rulers. Nobody from the centre thought of acting against any government there. Their protection under the 370 was continued. Now that 370 has gone the MITHAI has become afsos mithai.

If the President of Congo could be convicted in International court of justice and sentenced for 30 years why not the Chief Ministers of Kashmir who oversaw the Ethnic cleansing and cover up after that along with all those who grabbed the vacated properties.

The calm in Kashmir is because these leaders are in detention. They need to be convicted and put away for a long time for lasting peace in Kashmir.

    • If the President of Congo could be convicted in International court of justice …
that is the only hope left of feku-motu getting their just desserts in this world. in the next one, i hope they have to face the music (since ganga-mai is now too polluted to wash away all sins…). Hai Ram!!

      • Hi Kali Das, how long has it been since we saw peace in Kashmir? In the last 30 years, since Terrorism started in Kashmir, the region has not seen this much Peace. This has been possible only because of the tough measures taken by this Govt. There will always be Leftists who will keep crying. They never do anything positive for the country, anyway. Don’t criticize just for the sake of criticizing. Analyze the situation well.

    • INDIA NEVER SAW INDISCIPLINE DURING EMERGENCY DURING WHICH PERIOD ALL GOVERNMENT OFFICES WERE A PICTURE OF EFFICIENCY AND SPEED . AND TRAINS ARRIVED ON TIME . DO WE WANT EMERGENCY AGAIN TO BRING IN DISCIPLINE OR DO WE BRING IN DISCIPLINE THROUGH DEMOCRATIC METHODS ? MIND YOU BOTH MODI AND SHAH WOULD HAVE BEEN IN JAIL DURING EMERGENCY HAD THEY BEEN IMPORTANT LEADERS OF THE RSS AND THE BJP AT THAT TIME . A MUCH YOUNGER STALIN WAS JAILED BECAUSE HE WAS AN ACTIVE AND VOLUBLE LEADER OF THE YOUTH WING OF THE DMK. LASTLY BALASAHEB DEORAS THE THEN CHIEF OF THE RSS HAD WELCOMED EMERGENCY AND SANG PRAISES OF INDIRA GANDHI FOR IMPOSING EMERGENCY

  8. Your blind hatred to the BJP and Modi-Shah reflects in this article. It’s no wonder you come up with cooked up stories or stories selectively picked up from people disliking the current dispensation. Trying out things suggested by pseudoliberals like you for 70 years gave Kashmir, the gift of stone pelting, bombs going off every now and then, unemployment, radicalisation, and yeah… Most importantly super posh bungalows and other previleges to the divisive forces funded by the Indian taxpayers. When you can’t offer a viable solution (which you failed to for 70 years) to a festering problem, just shut up and watch when someone else tries to do that. It’s only been three months and you’re expecting investments to flow and Kashmir to glow!! How foolish you are!!! Why don’t you go door to door in Kashmir and appeal for deradicalisation, educate the brainwashed youth… instead of spreading more insecurity and confusion among them by writing a piece of crap like this??!! That way you serve the nation better.

    • Your blind devotion to BJP and Modi-Shah reflects in your comment. Why dont YOU try going to Kashmir and doing a door-to-door pro-Modi-Shah proselytism? may be you will also see and learn some ground reality in spite of being an andh-bhakt? Or are you simply a paid troll? or even a bot?

      • The Indian public is always irritated. If the road is bad, they are irritated, if the road is under construction and they have to take a diversion, they are irritated at that. The kashmiris (after all Indians) are showing similar behavior. They are mad at these sudden changes and this 100 day lockdown, and they have the right to be, I’m not judging them. I’m saying they are only focusing on this current setback to their incomes , they are not realizing the huge economic boost that is about to hit them. Kashmir has huge huge potential for industrialization in sericulture, and agriculture. The kashmiri silk is prized all around the world. There is a huge market for their silk products and their fruits and dry fruits are of export quality. This is going to bring a lot of money into Kashmir and they won’t have to completely depend on the 6 month employment they get from tourism. Their views on the topic right now are only based on their current discomfort of these 3-4 months , they are not seeing the years of accelerated development about to come. I give it to you in writing , that, they will be supporting the current government in the next election.

      • Dear Lobeo Rohita, Do you know how many Lockdowns (Hartals) were happening earlier? Every other day, either the Terrorists or the Hurriyat (they are the same team anyway) used to call for Hartal, and all shops had to shut down. If any of the shopkeepers dared to open, he will be either beaten up or killed. For the last 100 days, none of this has happened. Agreed, those businesses that depend on the Internet, have been affected. But on the other side, there is PEACE, finally. People can go out on to the roads. Children can go to school and study. Remember, earlier Terrorists had blown up 150 schools in Kashmir, because to them Education is Haraam. Do you believe that PEACE is the most important thing for any development and prosperity?

  9. 1. Kashmiri muslims for last 70 years were never with India, they were only pretending. Hence this rona dhona will not decieve us.
2.They are a buffer state between the Ghazawa e hind forces and Hindus. These few muslims from a very small geographical area, ghetoed with high density , have willingly become themselves a means of executing the ghazwa e hind project.
3 It is a long fight and will continue till India fully gets rid of these anti India and anti hindu people
4 Mean while at some point of time ,India will be forced to use the methods being used by China on uighur muslims to de radicalise these religous bigots.
5 YY’s opinion of any kind is irrelevant now.Time to reconcile has lapsed.India will not tolerate hence forth this back stabing. We will fight it openly now onwards with these jehadis masqurading as victims .Why India should go on feeding them, what good these jeahadis have doneor given back to India over last 70 years ?Stop this nonsensical appeasment. Now onwards these people have to prove that they are good Indian citizens.
6 YY would notice not even one reader has supported his this article. Why? He should introspect himself.

  10. I don’t understand the point here. Everything said is fine. But what is your solution to the Kashmir problem. You don’t offer any solution. The government (BJP) is damned if they don’t do anything or even if they do something. What do you want? This question is to YY not to Kashmiris. Do you want India to simply withdraw from Kashmir? Kashmir will simply be occupied by Pakistan. There problem is not going to go away.
People expect investors to simply open their purse and start investing right away. It has been just 3 months or so. You have been sitting on this problem for the last 70 years. Give it sometime before lamenting.

  11. BJP has been blaming “Kashmir Problem” on Article 370 for decades. Likes of Yadav played along with the narrative and demonization of Jawaharlal Nehru. They suddenly realized that Article 370 was never a problem. Blaming Amit Shah is futile. Likes of Yadav are equally to blame for the building up of the hysteria.

  12. Mr Yadav,

It’s no brainer, of course, there is a disconnect between the rest of the country and the people of Kashmir. That has been the case ever since Adam was a lad. With some sound bytes from the ground, you’re trying to get some press for an otherwise forgetable career as a psephologist or as a politician. You might want to urgently speak to the farmers (your constituency?) burning all the stubble out there!

  13. YY is member of “tukade tukade” gang, useless and typical jhola chap politician. He considers himself a big intectual but in reality he is a nexalite.

  14. Dear Mr. Yadav

I started reading the article, you have penned, but has to give up reading it in the middle. AS soon as you said

“ I did not come across even one coherent voice that supported the central government’s move. Finally, I asked a group of friends if they knew of any Kashmiri living in the Valley who supported the new policy. Pat came the reply, “Koi gadha bhi support nahin karega (Not even a donkey supports this”

I knew right away that you are just making it up. No matter what “you always find a Gadha who will support a dictum, however reprehensible , it may be” in sociological context. That is the reason of the Arrow’s General Impossibility Theorem, that is, you can not have an objective that is supported by each individual in a society.
I am aware of your pathological hatred of Modi, Amit Shah and BJP, may not in that order, but if you write something against someone or a decision, while mostly making it up, at least try to make it believable and/or plausible. As it stands now your opinion is not worth a paisa and even your ardent fan will smirk on this peace of garbage

  15. So they felt like Indians before this move
They are not feeling so now either because of this move or because of Amit shah
    Is that your conclusion?

  16. There can’t be two laws in one country. Now no one is paying ₹500/- daily for stone pelting which was a great fun Kashmir youths. Our soldiers were stone pelted, harassed, manhandled etc.etc. Inspite of guns in their hands, they were mute. innumerable soldiers killed by terrorists on a daily basis. More than all these things, our country’s security was at a great threat. Now abolishing article 370 has brought some discipline in the state. Let us hope for the best in future years.

  17. Yadavji
Did you ask them whether they felt integrated with India before this move?
It is a high joke to say that there attracted to Pakistani islamism because of this move
This is just another narrative to prevent the integration with India
When will you people stop this anti India narrative?

  18. “Professor sahib, I used to read you and talk to my students about ‘the idea of India’. What should I teach them now?”

Professor Sahib: “Having taught ‘my idea of India’, see where am I now ! Na udhar ka, Na idhar ka” 🙁

  19. My exp ..They hate indian and feel as they are muslims , pakistan is their rehnuma. To bridge this divide , India need to do few things, first all mosque in valley need to be monitored as it is culprit in religion. next india need to forcefully dismantle this majority and bring more hindus and sikh to valley specially olsd kashmir town. kashmir muslim understanding after 30 year brainwash is india occupy , once this misconception goes kashmir will be integrated.

  20. It’s good for BJP’s growth in Kashmir valley that Modi haters continue to live in their make and believe world. Now a days any Modi hater can declare himself/herself as an political activist and pretend to represent the people’s voice but to get elected by people is beyond their ability. YY is such a failed politician who has been kicked by his own colleagues but his shamelessness remains unbounded. YY’s expertise is in manufacturing stories based on imagination and a lot of lies. YY is good for nothing. He is lucky to get space in anti Modi media otherwise he could be making a living by posting videos on Youtube.

  21. Mr Yogendra pls also give your time for nation building than espousing the cause of separatism. You were unceremoniously kicked out of AAP inspire of being founder but still didn’t dare to protest.

  22. Hi Dear I can see you have put a lot of efforts in understanding the Kashmiri peoples view. But did you ever tried to ask them what were the benefits of article 370 to them how that was helping.
did you ever explained what will be benefit they will get after removal of 370. I guess being true Indian you must have done that.

  23. A propaganda piece of sh* t. You be what you want to be. There has always been jihadi tendencies there, it is better that are crushed now forever. This policy post Aug 5 has to be just a start. It is more dangerous to have hidden enemy (like the people there who pretend to support us but speak language of our neighbor) working for enemies across borders then to outright clear enemy.

    • Muslim invaders ended with the time but left behind their slaves which are creating more problems than Masters, first they divided the country in 1947, second attacked the country three times and divided their beloved country Pakistan into two parts in 1971 and in the third attempt started terrorism in Kashmir by getting support of local Muslims. Hindus were kicked out by Muslims from the valley but enjoying full economic support from the Indian government. Hindus should not be ashamed if Valley is closed forever because these extremist Muslims are responsible for the annihilation of Hindus.
