BJP’s habit of justifying policies with absurd logic has set a dangerous precedent

Modi government has simply passed the buck, refusing to accept that its actions have pushed the economy into a dire state.

The state of the Indian economy has been a grim conversation-starter for Indians across the country in recent times. The justifications provided by the Narendra Modi government would be quite humourous if we were not dealing with such a serious issue. Elected officials with ‘degrees’ from well-reputed universities have exhibited levels of competence on par with high school students. Union and state ministers belonging to the BJP have garnered quite a lot of attention with their tweets and interviews. So, do these justifications show genuine incompetence on the part of the government or is it a systematic attempt to drive attention away from the slowing economy?

A parallel can be drawn with the shenanigans of US President Donald Trump, who regularly makes headlines with outrageous comments. Trump’s behaviour raises questions about how a business mogul could exhibit such levels of immaturity and stupidity.

Avoiding questions

Modi’s behaviour could be a way to divert people’s attention from his largely oppressive policies. Similarly, it is absurd to consider that a party, which regularly wins elections for its meticulous planning and organisation, is incapable of generating ideas for the betterment of the economy. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, with her ‘millennial’ remark, shifted the focus from the actual factors causing the decline in the auto sector to memes and comments at her expense.

When genuine questions regarding the fall of the GDP and the lack of fiscal measures were posed to her by people like former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and entrepreneur Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, she avoided answering them and simply gave false reassurances on behalf of the Modi government.

The deputy chief minister of Bihar, Sushil Kumar Modi, said the economic slowdown is a recurring phenomenon, which occurs during the months of ‘saawan-bhado’, furthering the BJP government’s general agenda of justifying its policies with absurd logic.

This shows the pattern the Modi government has been following in avoiding any responsibility for the consequences of its actions. When a government’s policies have caused more damage than development, it is the government’s duty to accept responsibility, look for solutions for the betterment of the country, and take steps to implement these solutions.

Escaping accountability

However, the Modi government has simply passed the buck, refusing to accept that its actions have pushed the economy into a dire state. A key feature of authoritarian regimes is the rejection of the need to justify their policies to the working classes. A dangerous comparison can be made to the BJP, which has looked to control Indians with an iron hand, simply organising the masses for whatever majoritarian agenda it is seeking to push.

With a large uneducated and unemployed population, there is a huge possibility the oppressed classes are being deliberately denied empowerment and upliftment so that they can be politically used to create divisions when the usual diversionary tactics don’t work. Thus, the BJP’s apparent incompetence in responding to the questions on economic slowdown has set a dangerous precedent in holding the government responsible for its actions.

  1. Well written piece highlighting the current economic scenario in India and the government’s incompetence to cope with it. Kudos, Hadin! I can’ t fathom the fact that there still are people out there (a few here in the comments as well) who turn a blind eye to what is happening and like to believe that things will work out for the better, the way the current government in functioning. I am not being negative, I do have hope but practically, unless the Government pulls up its socks and actually takes corrective action with abled politicians and leaders taking the lead, I do not see any progress.

  2. This is what we can expect from this government as it is for the benefits of few selected corporates who have put them in power. Economy has gone down people are suffering, but these corporates flourished.

  3. 1.As the article is written in TH PRINT I read it it carefully. The writer has said only what has been said in public platforms. He did not bother to give facts and figures with source of information. He also has not suggested any solutions for the problems .

  4. Dear communist chamcha, are you aware that only the communists are infamous for brainwashing innocent people by creating illusion and bullshit reasoning by making tamasha of democratic systems.

  5. It is a fact that Modi has no coherent plan for the economy. He deliberately surrounded himself with dummies and his economic decisions lurch from one crisis to another. Start with Nepal blockade, Demonetisation, ill prepared GST, Sagging Exports, Falling GDP , Investment and Employment, Utter neglect and clueless about Agricuture economy. The worst thing is he will not face the Journalists in an open Q & A session .But 90% of energy will be wasted on Pakistan with less than 200 million USD economy and 8 million Kashmiris in the valley. Kartar Corridor will revive Sikh militancy but Modi must support Akalis , the alleged drug dealers. So much for sagacity and farsight. Question is who is going to pay the Bills ,foolish Indian Public of course.
