Off The Cuff with Amish Tripathi

Author Amish Tripathi was in conversation with ThePrint’s Editor-in-chief Shekhar Gupta and Associate Editor Manasi Phadke at Off The Cuff in Mumbai. Tripathi, who recently published Raavan – Enemy of Aryavarta, the third book of his ‘Ram Chandra’ series, spoke about the fascinating and nuanced character of Raavan, and the book is his darkest work so far.

The bestselling author also spoke about the need for a strong criminal justice system to deal with violence by extremists across communities and how most of India is absent in the public debate between the Left and the Right who feed on each other.

“People get harmed but how can that be stopped? Will it be stopped by demonising Jai Shree Ram or Allah O Akbar? No. It gets stopped by a proper criminal justice system,” said Amish Tripathi.

Purva Chitnis, an NDTV correspondent, asked the author: “You have stuck to this mythological genre. Is there a particular reason for that? And you have been writing about Hindu mythology, would you consider broadening it?”

“There are extremists in all communities. Some may wrongly use Jai Shree Ram, some may use Allah-o-akbar. I don’t think that is the moot point. The moot point is people taking the law in their own hands. Whether they use any slogans or not… They need to be punished with the full force of the law,” said Tripathi.
