Woman in Manipur tests positive for coronavirus, first case in Northeast

The 23-year-old woman had recently returned from the UK to Imphal via Delhi and Guwahati airports.

Imphal: A 23-year-old woman tested positive for the coronavirus in Manipur, the first confirmed case in the Northeast, officials said on Monday.

The woman had recently returned from the UK, Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences Director Th Bhimo Singh said.

She had returned to Imphal via Delhi and Guwahati airports.

Nearly 500 coronavirus cases have been reported in India so far, according to Health Ministry data.

As cases of the viral infection surged, authorities have put almost the entire country under lockdown, banning gathering of people and suspending road, rail and air traffic till 31 March.
