New Delhi: A tweet from an account followed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is urging Brahmins all over the world to create an island country outside India — a post that has both caught a lot of attention on social media and evoked sharp reactions.

In a series of tweets, Twitter user Mahesh (@Mahesh10816) Tuesday wrote that Brahmins should come together to purchase an island in some part of the world and create a separate country for “where they can follow their culture & rituals with their heads held high”.

The Twitter thread further said: “When a particular micro minority community like Brahmins are being treated as expendables there are going to be repercussions, Jews are perfect example….Brahmins should create MNC’s that can fund their dreams and help their community.”

The account, which has over 38,000 followers, mentions in the bio that it is being followed by PM Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. It also describes the user as “Patriotic Indian-India First-Call a Spade a Spade”.

Among those who also follow the account are West Bengal BJP leader Locket Chatterjee, party MLA Ramesh Mendola and Congress leader Salman Kurshid.

The first tweet of the series, posted Tuesday at 3:25pm, garnered 779 retweets, 1,630 quote tweets and 2,616 likes as of 4:40pm Wednesday.

The tweets evoked a mix of reactions, including some calling it seditious and casteist.

One Twitter user wrote: “Brahminism survives on oppression. Who will you oppress on an island filled with people of your caste?”

Several tweets echoed similar thoughts.

‘Religious fanatic, patriot who wants to leave India’

A Twitter user compared the “religious fanatics” demanding a separate country to the Taliban, the Islamic group in the news for their takeover of Afghanistan amid the withdrawal of US troops.

Some joked about how an account that describes the user as ‘patriotic’ was calling on people to leave India.

Meanwhile, some users pointed out that leaving India would mean leaving behind their birth land. “…but we can’t abandon our temples, the deities, the mutts and our soil. This is the land where Bhagawan Ram and Krishna have walked. This is not a piece of real estate, every follower of Sanadhan dharma sees it as his Karma Bhoomi (sic),” wrote a Twitter user who had a photo of a Hindu deity as their profile picture.

Another user wrote: “This holy land is Holy due to thousands of years of Tapas by our ancestors Rishis. This land is special & this is where we will need to re-establish Dharma (sic)”. A ‘proud Hindu’ Twitter user said, “Is it possible to burn down a house for fear of insects?”.
