New Delhi: The Unnao rape survivor had written to the Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi, on 12 July stating that she was being threatened to “compromise” in the case as the “judge would be bought for a price and Sengar will be bailed out”.

The letter was addressed to the CJI around 15 days before the deadly car accident at Rae Bareli Sunday evening that killed two of her aunts. The survivor, who had accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar of rape in April 2018, and her lawyer are now battling for life.

Her letter also alleges that her family had been threatened that “false cases will be lodged against them” if they didn’t cede to the “compromise”.

According to letter, at around 9 am on 7 July, the brothers of Sengar and his associate Manoj Singh and three others related to another of the MLA’s aides, Shashi Singh, had threatened her that a “judge would be bought by us and will ensure bail for Kuldeep and Shashi. Thereafter, false cases would be lodged against you and all of you will rot in the jail”.

Shashi Singh is the father of one of the men accused of allegedly gang-raping her. The Allahabad HC had recommended that this case be investigated by the CBI.

The letter states that similar threats continued on 8 July too, with the rape survivor requesting the Supreme Court to take action against those threatening her.

Victim critical

The development comes as the rape survivor continues to remain critical.

ThePrint had earlier reported that the 19-year-old and her family had approached the CBI last month and sought transfer of the trial to Delhi, mentioning that they feared being attacked by Sengar’s aides.

The CBI took over the investigation in the case in April 2018 and filed four separate FIRs.

While one was a case of rape of a minor based on the survivor’s complaint, another was on the assault and death of her father in police custody. A third case was filed on a cross-complaint by the MLA’s brother alleging assault by the rape survivor’s relatives.

The fourth case relates to her being allegedly gang-raped by three men, including Shashi Singh’s son. The chargesheets have been filed in the first two cases.

  1. @Baba this happens when lawyers become judges through elevation instead of recruited judges by the public service commission of state. They don’t even know basics and climb to top posts in judiciary. Lawyers should not be allowed to become judges and public service commission should do appointments of judges. Govt also should not interfere. If collegium has judges recruited via PSC , they will obviously be more streamlined in their work then the lawyers.

  2. There is a slang in Indian lawyer circles about winning a case… To win a case you First convince Judge and then confuse the Judge and if still not yielding corrupt the Judge…. This is harsh reality of Judiciary in the country. Few days back I came across a Additional Sessions Judge who is not able to read understand the contents of an affidavit in English

  3. The party should have discarded him long back and allowed the law to take its own course. The CM job is not to sit in the chair but to ensure discipline in the party and keep his goodwill intact. If the CM is determined to finish dadagiri in his state, he must be aware that gundas exist in his party also and he should eliminate those one also

  4. You guys may not be knowing, the PIL is just an ornamental thing… Only used to be worn by eminent lawyers to gain fame and stardom. Otherwise those real issues brought by concerned citizens by a mail or letter were thrown into dustbin by a registar level officer without any knowledge of the Honourable Justices of the Supreme Court who are warming chairs of judiciary.

  5. This brave girl’s life hangs by a thread. The thought struck me – before watching Cut the Clutter, which explained the case would die if she did – that someone in the hospital might just slip her some substance that would end the story. New India is unfolding before our eyes.
