New Delhi, Jul 19 (PTI) Two members of the Irani gang, who had travelled to Delhi from Bhopal to commit robberies, were apprehended following a brief exchange of fire on Saturday, an official said.
The accused, identified as Murtaza Ali alias Damar (38) and Siraj Ali (40), suffered bullet injuries to their left legs during the shootout and were taken to Safdarjung Hospital for treatment, the official added.
A trap was laid near the Meerut Expressway T-point, opposite Indraprastha Park, after police received specific input about the movement of the accused, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Aishwarya Sharma said.
Around 12:30 am, the suspects were intercepted while riding a motorcycle.
“When they were challenged by the police team, the duo opened fire, prompting a retaliatory action,” the officer said.
A total of seven rounds were fired during the encounter — four by the accused and three by the police. Following the shootout, both accused were overpowered and rushed to the hospital, police said.
During interrogation, the accused revealed that they had travelled to Delhi from Bhopal with the intention of committing robberies along with other gang members. Police are currently working to trace and apprehend their associates.
The crime and forensic teams visited the spot for inspection, and a case has been registered at the Sunlight Colony police station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act.
Murtaza has 46 cases of robbery, dacoity, and theft registered against him across Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka. He was last released from jail a year ago.
Siraj Ali previously worked as a street vendor, selling belts and perfumes. He has a record under the Arms Act in Bhopal, police said.
Police recovered two pistols, six live cartridges, a stolen Bajaj Pulsar motorcycle, and seven empty shells from the scene.
“Constable Rajender, who was wearing a bulletproof jacket, escaped unhurt after one of the bullets fired by the accused hit his vest,” the Additional DCP said. PTI SSJ HIG HIG
