‘Named to reflect communist ideology’
The groom’s father, A. Mohan, is the district secretary of the Communist Party of India (CPI). According to Mohan, he named his sons to reflect the communist ideology and reportedly took the decision to counter the ‘communism is dead’ statements that began circulating after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.
“Three sons were born to me and I named them Communism, Leninism and Socialism respectively. Most of our comrades named their sons Lenin or Marx. But I don’t know whether anyone has been named Socialism,” he told The New Indian Express.
He further noted that his sons had to face some humiliation due to their names, but caught attention when they entered college.
“My first son Communism is a lawyer by profession and my second son Leninism and third son Socialism are running a silver anklet manufacturing unit in our home. All three are working for the CPI. Following my decision, my son Leninism also named my grandson Marxism,” Mohan added.
He further acknowledged that while the names may sound new and bizarre to others, they were quite common among his “comrades”.
“These names may sound new to the outer world, but it is quite common here. Around 60 years ago, senior comrades here had such names. The names of communist countries and leaders — such as Moscow, Russia, Vietnam, Bupesh Gupta, Jeevanandham, Venmani and Czechoslovakia — were given to comrades here. My children were named similarly.”
The bride’s family, meanwhile, are Congress supporters. They were impressed by Mamata Banerjee’s work within the Congress party 20 years ago and decided to name their daughter after her.
Mamata, who is currently the West Bengal Chief Minister, was part of the Indian National Congress before leaving to form the Trinamool Congress in 1998.
