Hyderabad: ‘Democracy Wall’ — the moment I heard the two words, I was completely intrigued by the idea of what this event might entail and consequently, the media student in me was drawn towards attending this event on 23 August at CMR college in Hyderabad.

The sessions, conducted by prominent members, were thoroughly insightful, which makes it challenging for me to concise it to a prescribed word limit.

The day began with powerful words from AIMIM MP Asaddudin Owaisi, who addressed the Kashmir issue. Although, one of the greatest orators of his times, many have often criticised Owaisi for his harsh words.

Speaking about the Kashmir’s traumatic situation, Owaisi said the union territory was under communication blackout and although the fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution applied to Kashmir even after the scrapping of Article 370, the clampdown was still not lifted.

Then came rapper Sofia Ashraf who captivated the audience with her rap songs through which she expressed her feelings on several national issues. She put forward a message to be aware of our privileges and know about our duties as citizens of the country. And I must say, her life-story is inspirational and ThePrint couldn’t have found a better ambassador of free speech.

In the next session, when Bollywood actor Nimrat Kaur graced the stage, I was awe-struck by her presence and it was a delight to watch her interact with the students. She spoke about her journey in the film industry and motivated the students to move past their barriers to excel in life.

‘Fake news session was feast for my mind’

As a journalism student, fake news is my favourite topic and the session by Mr Rakesh Duguddu on identifying fake news was a feast for my mind. He stressed that if a piece of information is too good to be true, 99.9 per cent of the time, it is not true.

Another session with IPS officer Rema Rajeshwari was a truly engrossing one. I learnt a new term called ‘community policing’ and it got me thinking about doing my part as a citizen of this country.

Then when comedian Pavitra Shetty came on stage, I could not stop laughing. With effortless dialogues, she lightened up the mood of the audience after some very serious discussions and it was a perfect ending to the event.

The contests were an interesting addition to the event, which ensured inclusiveness of the students.

I would like to acknowledge the efforts of ThePrint and CMR College of Engineering & Technology for organising this event with so much hard work.

I would also like to recognise the diligence of the event-presenter Ms Rohini, who ensured that the event was conducted smoothly. I was pleased to see women excelling in male-dominated fields. I feel privileged to be invited to the event, which helped me enrich my knowledge about media and I look forward to attending more erudite events like this.

G.S. Gayathri is a student of journalism at St Mary’s College, Yousufguda, Hyderabad. This article is part of Democracy Wall’s ‘Student Experience Project’ where a student writes about her/his experience at the event.
